Hello All,
First off would like to give a hearty hello ... ive been lurking on this forum for quite some time now! I already have a JP6 in mystic dream that I love. So I guess I am part of the family.

Anyways I just grabbed a new Y2D off ebay in the Purple Sunset color. My question is about strings. What strings can I put on this guitar without messing it up and requiring a resetup. Ive done some searching and it appears to be a custom set 10-42 default? Id like to use a set of regular 10-46 on this guitar. Will that be a problem? Id hate to have to bring it too a local tech right off the bat too get it adjusted. Simply dont trust the local tech. Perhaps this is something I could easily setup if need be? Hopefully it wont cause any issues and I wont have to worry about it. So whats the concensus?

Also anyone have any clips of themselves or others playing this beauty? I love the JP and it certainly is a speed demon but the Y2D looks just a bit more classy too me. Hopefully the sound matches its looks : )

Thanks in advance for any replies!

u can put 10-46 on her and be just fine !!!!!!!
the slightly bigger 46 & 36 will raise the string height over your neck.......but it will be such a small amount u will probably not even feel it. how much it comes up depends on how stiff yer neck is.
and if you do want to lower the action some......turn the truss rod clockwise a little til it gets where u want it. typically takes about 1/8 to 1/4 of a full rotation.
(clockwise if u are looking down the neck from the bridge.)
:D

oh yea.....& welcome to our little group of knuckleheads !!!!!!!

Its a tune-o-matic bridge so I guess I have nothing too worry about.

Can anyone tell me what to expect out of the pickups? Do they run pretty hot? Are they anything like the petrucci pickups? Id like to use both guitars while gigging and would rather not have to completely change my tone to accomodate each.

Thanks for the welcome Tommy!

Welcome aboard!

While I wouldn't classify the pickups as super hot, I do find them a little bit more agressive than the JP pickups. To my ears they sound sopmewhere between the JP and the Axis. I like them quite a bit.

Hey Zap,

Welcome to the EBMM forum family. Nice purchase, those Y2D's are freakin' spectacular. Tommy is one of our in-house specialists. I'd take his advice as "right on the money," so don't hesitate for a second to take his advice.

I also find the Y2D pickups hotter than the Petrucci.

The Y2D is also a brighter sounding instrument (different pickups, poplar body w/maple top, etc.).

Maybe you can get away with something simple like tuning your rig for the JP and then using an EQ stompbox pedal to tweak the tone when you're using the Y2D?

Ahhh Y2D in da house!!

Ok I have no means of getting pics up yet .. so I apologize in advance.
First thing I did when I got it was put a set of 10-46 on it and indeed the action did raise up quite a bit. What is the best means to lower the action on this? This has the tune-o-matic bridge so I assume maybe get a regular screw driver out and attempt too lower it? Or do I want to turn the truss-rod a little bit?

I did have band practice tonight and it did certainly sound brighter than my JP6. Will need to work on eq'ing it. The clean sound was much better.. single notes sound allot cleaner when distorted. It doesnt have as much sustain as I would like but that is most likely a matter of the high action and string hight from the pickups.

The color shape and feel of the guitar is just simply amazing. I was awestruck when I first opened the case.

Hopefully someone can help me out with some setup info.

Thanks!
