Hi all - first time poster, long time lurker :)

Just got back from the music store and tried 4 EB basses - three Rays and a Sterling. Haven't really played a Ray since I sold my '78 back in the mid 90s.

The Rays were single humbuckers - one was 3 band EQ/rosewood board, the other 2 band/maple board. The Sterling was single H as well, rosewood board. The HH Ray was rosewood, 3 band with 5 poisition switch.

All were great - HH noticeably heavier weight-wise. Those new pickup covers take some getting used to thumb-wise, but they are nice.

My favourite by far? The single H Ray with 2 band eq - reminds me of my old '78 (long gone) except QUIETER by far, punchy as hell, great neck and frets, LOVE the truss wheel and compensated nut. I realized although all were great, I am still a single pickup guy.....and I may need to buy this bass :) This bass is, in every way, SUPERIOR to my former '78, both in tone and build (I had the dreaded ski jump happen to the neck).

ONLY downside was the treble side of the body wasn't QUITE as tight (small angled gap) as the others, which were all perfectly even and tight. This had ZERO affect on tone/stability from what I could tell.

One thing that did disappont me, which is down to the store not EB - the setup, or lack thereof - only the 2 band Ray had strings that weren't DEAD. It did need a small truss rod tweak, but that is acceptable. The others had lifeless strings AND mile high action - a shame, since for many this would turn them off, thinking they were hard to play basses. When the sales guy said "it just needs a small truss adjustment", my response was "then why don't you guys DO that at least once a year and sell more of these" :)

Might be joining your club soon!

Welcome, Jamie!

Sounds like you're one of us already. What store are you talking about?

Jack

Hi Jack - thanks for the welcome .

I'd rather not mention the store, since largely they are great AND I MAY be trying to "negotiate" an EB purchase soon! :) That being said, the Bongo 5 another branch had a while back was abysmally setup, though the Fenders fared far worse.

Yeah, I'm in the club already in a way, as even when I sold my pre-EB Ray, I "created" my own SR5 clone - back in the mid 90s, none of the stores in my area (Atlantic Canada) could get EB basses due to supply/demand I was told (i.e. they can't supply new areas until they meet the orders of the existing ones). I didn't want to buy basses sight unseen, so I "Frankensteined" my own....that has changed in recent years and hence my audtion of several EB basses today.

But through it all, that Ray style tone is the one I've loved most - I occassionally dig a Jazz and such, but they never work for ME - I can only get "my sound"on a Ray for whatever reason....any time I get a non-Ray style bass, I keep trying to EQ in a RAY tone, which you'd think would give me a hint no?

I am dangerously close to buying the bass I tried today, which ironically is EXACTLY the same colour/look as my original '78 (black with black guard, maple board, 2 band)....gave me a similar rush like when I first played the pre-EB Ray way back in the day.....

Cheers all,

Jamie

Hi Jamie,

Yeah, unfortunatley some basses and guitars end up in the hands of "others" (some good, some not so good) when maintaining them for customers.

That's why I say all MM instruments need a "good" home (as soon as possible:)!

If that Blk/Blk/maple 2-band has a mute bridge and birdseye neck,
I'll pay you handsomely to buy it and ship it to me!!!! :D

I'm in the 1-bucker SR4 camp too; 2 or 3-band, don't matter . . .

Hi again all,

I HAVE tried Bongos before (both 4 and 5)....not my thing, though I do see why so many dig them. For the record, the look was NOT an issue - I'd play a Daisy Rock flower bass in bright pink if it played and sounded phenomenal :)

OK - back to the Stingray - the Black 2-bander is haunting my dreams....ha ha ha...SO much like my old '78, and yet, in all the best ways, different - don't miss the crumbling bridge mute pads and bullet truss rod, and although it was stable, the 3 bolt neck attachment always made me a bit uneasy.

Although it will likely be after Christmas, this MAY be the bass to finally break me out of my self-imposed second-hand bass buying - haven't bought a brand new bass since 1989......

Cheers,

Jamie
