just wanted to say a stingray with worn in strings is the best sound ever

just absolutely blown away by the tone im getting out of this, it is as versitile as people are saying now too with the more worn in strings on it. this thing is freaken amazing now, really nothing can beat this sound muahahaahahahahahhahaahahahhahahaaaaaa

Do not underestimate the power of the dull-side...







I myself tend to change my strings before they need it - I prefer the brighter punch of fresh strings... But that's just me.

Yeah love the new bass boomers or slinkys for me....usually just after a couple of heavy gigs I find they sounds just perfect for a couple of months

I change them when they break or when they flatten out over the frets from wear (normally the point when the strings start acting funny). Maybe a couple times a year or so...

I like 'em all. Maybe not brand spanky new, except TIs. I keep going to & fro with flats or rounds on my fretless Sterling. I love the rounds (TI Jazz rounds) for their clarity & growl. But I love the flats for the heavier fundamental. Recently I put a set of old flats on and that's great too! Real nice thud.

Worn-in (IE very, very old) Slinkys have a great tone. But you can get that right away with flats.

I just put flats (D'Addario Chromes on my SR5, expecting to like them, but surprisingly didn't! Not quite enough clarity to cut in my big band. But I also don't like bright zinginess. My next experiment will be heavier D'Addario nickel XLs, and see how they sound in a few months.

I also do like the old Sunbeams on my P-bass, so I want to try them too..

Interesting thought. What's the major difference between those in your experience? I've liked the sound I've heard in the clips you've posted.

Electric Guitar - When I played upon my 'Nez (don't worry guys, I'm all Musicman now) I left the strings on for (hides behind arms with shame) one and a half years and they constantly improved. I have now let a fellow band member shred upon that guitar and he hasn't changed them yet. Strange case of worn string greatness.

+1 on dead Nickel strings. I've got dead DRs on my Bongo and the tone is schweet. A pack of dead EB Super Slinkies also await their turn, once these DRs break.

Slightly OT: You know what's odd? I like the feel of roundwounds better. Flats are nice an smooth and all, but that bothers me a bit when I'm playing. Dunno why. Anyone else prefer the feel of roundwounds?

yeah nothing feels better than new roundwounds but nothing sounds better than old roundwounds in my opinion.


never tried flats i remember the last time i played on a bass with what i believed to be flats strung on they felt very simmular to the strings they put on uprights

+1 on that. im all about the bling bling of new strings. I was in a band that gigged a bunch a few years ago and i got so addicted to the tone of a sterling with new strings that id restring the thing a few times a month. cost a bunch but damn was it worth it
