Hey Guys (and gals) -

After having spent the better part of the last two days at my bank going over my atm transactions with a fine tooth comb - i encourage you to keep a close eye on your bank account and atm transactions. In short someone copied my atm card and went on a shopping spree... lets just say that i could have bought a BFR with the dammage they did... but because i had receipts available and a wonderful banking staff i'm going to get it all back.

So just try to keep a close eye and don't let your personal cards get out of your posession.

Did they mention how they copied your card? My assumtion would be a compromised ATM machine, with a card reader hacked into it. There are other methods, but that seems to be a common method.

I typically try to always use the same ATM, usually offical machines attached to the bank. I actively avoid using 3rd party ATM's, especially ones located in gas stations, bars, and other shady places. I also try to avoid using the debit card in stores where the handset is able to be compromised. Some places have the handset locked down, and uniquely identified, to stop the quickswap for a compromised handset.

Further, I tend to change my ATM PIN often. Almost always before and after going on vacation, as well as every month or so just to make it harder to hack my number.

Thankfully the bank will usually bail you out in cases of theft. They do this for good customer relations, but also because they have admittedly designed a very low security system which gives very high access to your money. It could be argued (in court if necessary) that the banks have not properly secured your funds. By covering the thefts, they basically keep themselves from getting sued.

Be certain that the "penalty" in place is simply sufficient to deter the crime. Now, think about it BEFORE you decide to do it.

So, for example, let's say that the punishment for stealing (obviously with clarity and substance of law) that your hand is cut off.

The pillaged citizenry will cry out "that's barbaric", we would rather continue to be plundered by criminals. Even with the population saying this in favor of criminals, they would NEVER have a single burglary because - who wants there hand cut off!!!

Simple.

Not really. USA has already laws much harder than in Europe for instance. You still have the Death Penalty but it seems that it does not improve your situation : you have much more bloody crimes than in Europe.

Spent a year in Saudi Arabia where they cut off hands....and heads too.....people didn't bother locking their cars or bikes & the banks had no security screens.

still their are crimes and thief in this country my mate who is a teacher and also working for government got his laptop stolen by a student, they found him and believe me they didn't cut his hand

Had my card clonned too a few years ago - and likewise the bank made good - approx £400 was ripped off. It does waste a lot of time sorting things out.

around here they've changing their cards with the new ones that have a computer chip built into the cards.
apparently it's suppose to stop the card cloning. (for now anyways.)

That's exactly my point!!! The LAW (punishment penalty) is sufficient to deter the crime. You wouldn't have anyone breaking the law!!!

yes, no more attorneys, judges, jails, police, etc. . . . (whoops) did I hit some people who may not like losing their jobs??

It's still nice to think that some countries can actually live like human beings (like Saudi Arabia as an example).
