So... since I got my Luke last week, I've started liquidating my guitar collection. I'm no longer in a band nor do I have the time to play much, so having several guitars kicking around is more hassle than anything. The Luke does everything I'd ever need from a guitar, and then some...

Long story short... it turned out my wife happened to be best friends with my guitar teacher's sister. I took lessons from him from age 9 to 11, he was in his early 20's at the time. Fast forward 20 some odd years, and we were able to reconnect. It turns out he hasn't played much in recent years due to 'life' obligations, ie family, work, etc. They came over Friday night and we got talking about guitars in general. I let him check out the Luke and an EVH Wolfgang Stealth, and he seemed pretty impressed with the stainless steel frets on the EVH. He asked how much I was asking for it, I threw a number out there and he raised an eyebrow with a degree of interest.

Fast forward to yesterday, our wives were texting away all afternoon  and his wife mentioned she'd really like to buy him a guitar since he seemed interested in picking it back up. She said she couldn't swing the $600 I wanted for the EVH, but I told my wife to have them stop by. Shortly after, they came by the house to hang out for a bit. Once again, we got talking about guitars and I asked what kind of shape his was in. He hadn't plugged his in for years since the electronics were whacked out. He wanted to get it fixed at some point but didn't really have the time or want to make it happen. I retrieved the EVH from the other room and handed it to him. Slightly dumbfounded, I explained that it was his doing keeping me on the musical path early on. Most kids might pick up the guitar but lose interest quickly, but his way of teaching me and keeping me interested changed my life for the better. I told him I wanted to give something back to him, so the EVH was his, free of charge. The only stipulation was that he started playing again, and that we get together so the student can show the teacher a thing or two these days! I don't think he knew how to react, but you could feel the room light up a bit.

After they left, the wife and I could only smile, knowing that this was the best thing for all involved. His wife sent mine a message shortly after, saying that he had been 'strumming away' in the basement since the second they got home, and she was in tears, listening out of sight.

That's my good deed of the weekend, carry on... :D

Wow, buddy - good karma indeed! :)

I've given away a handful of guitars as presents - and even a new drum set to one kid. Playing music is indeed a life changing experience...

Great story SN and good Karma should definitely be heading your way, though I know that wasn't even on your mind in that act of generosity. Through the years I have also given away a few guitars and it is a great feeling especially when you know they were put to good use. Three years ago a friend of mine came home from the Army and told me he was playing in a band. In this situation he is about 16 years younger then me and he started playing some originals he had recorded on his phone. Then he told me if it wasn't for me he would of never picked up a guitar and started bringing up gigs from a longtime ago and told me he would always watch my hands and run home trying to remember what I was doing. My main guitar back then was a heavily modded Fender Tele with stacked humbuckers and he brought up how he was saving for a Tele. I called him up a few days later and asked him if he could give me a hand fixing something in the house and when he showed up I gave him the back up Tele I used to bring behind my #1. It truly was one of the best feelings I had with guitars and the compliment that I was the reason he wanted to play didn't hurt lol.

That's awesome! I've never purposefully given a guitar away. Although I have let family borrow guitars only to find out they were sold to pay bills.

Nonetheless great job!

I have given guitars away, including my first ever decent electric guitar - an Aria Pro II, a guitar I worshiped growing up.

Always makes you feel good!
