Question L111 Humbucker battery compartment ?

What is the 9 volt battery used for on the L111 Humbucker version ? The boost? Or does the Humbucker L111
have a silent circut?

The L3 has an active preamp and also a boost.

The pre amp is awesome. There is no volume drop at all when the pickups are split
