Off Topic LA? Any good?

Hi guys, hope you can help me out.

I'm planning a little trip stateside in October. I was going to go to New York, but Louise has suggested we stop off in LA for a few days then head over to the Big Apple. Is this a decent plan?

I really love New York, Manhattan is fairly compact and there is plenty to do. My only experience of LA is passing through LAX on the way to the Desert Bash. LA does seem a little spread out and sprawling. Is it a reasonable destination for 4 or 5 days stop over or should we just spend the whole 12 days in New York?

do it for sure, go to Hollywood Venice Beach do a tour of the movie studios go to Guitar Centre heaps of things to do

I live in California for 5 years and LA would not be my spot for 4 to 5 days if traveling to USA - no offense to anyone in LA.

I would suggest Las Vega and add in a Grand Canyon National Park tour which is a short distance away - Google map it. You can also do Death Valley National Park and/or Mojave National Preserve. You'll get options of big city in Vegas and nature at the various Parks.

Although, NY may seem tamed after Vegas

Cheers, AntMan. I think if we skip LA we'll just go straight to New York and spend the 12 days there.

Just need a range of opinions on LA as a short break destination. Things to do, music scene etc.

That's a real kind offer, Chuck, but we are really limited time-wise. Perth to New York is a 52 hour return journey!

Vegas is a blast! Way better than LA or NY.

I'd consider spending a couple days in Yosemite National Park. Its about a 5 hour drive from LA (to get to the Valley floor) and one of the most gorgeous places you'll ever see if you love the outdoors. Google deleware north company for reservations.

One note though...most of the waterfalls are dry this time of year but a couple (vernal and Nevada) are still going.

Once you go you will understand why folks from all corners of the world put this spot on their must do list before they die.

I lived in LA until i was 21 and honestly cant think of a better thing to stay for then to leave it for Yosemite.

Okay guys, thanks for the comments so far.

The choice is, however, LA and New York, or just New York. We want a fast paced big city kind of holiday, nothing more. The message so far seems to be give LA a miss. I'd be interested in getting some more views.

If you're going to NY anyway, I'd give LA a miss completely and do a side trip to Washington DC for a few days. You could spend 12 hours per day for a week or two in museums, galleries and other great historical points of interest in and around DC and still not see everything. Highly recommended if you are a history buff.

Edit: I just reread your post, and you have 12 days. I'd rent a car in NY, head up to Boston and the New England area for a few days, then drive to DC as I mentioned. In between, check out the really interesting Civil War sites along that strip of states as you head south to DC.

I strongly recommend visiting parks like Yosemite. This is what our state should be known for but since you seem set in visiting an urban area I say skip LA (blech) and go somewhere historic like DC @ The Mall or maybe Boston.

I've lived here my entire life, and I would honestly say that in October, you'd probably enjoy a trip to the Napa Valley outside of San Francisco for some beautiful Fall foliage and late-season grape harvest scenery/wine tasting...

LA is an ugly, overcrowded city, and I'm AMAZED that people actually go out of their way to see "Hollywood and Vine" and are usually bitterly disappointed at what actually awaits them...

Better option would be to hit San Diego or Northern San Diego county/Temecula, or the Central Coast (where a certain guitar company is domiciled)...

I suggest you go to Joshua Tree instead! That place is phenomenal, or vegas is good too. But LA is not really the place to be at... Unless you have friends there there aren't a lot to do imo.

Spoken to a few people here who know LA and we've decided to give it a miss. Just head straight to New York and spend 12 days there.

I'm looking forward to it.
