Welcome to the addiction!

Those are two different beasts.

1. Les Paul will be only that - a Les Paul with the Les Paul sound. I believe it is substantially heavier and will have that particular sound.

2. JP w/piezo....awesome tonal range, lighter, body contours, will stay in tune much better IMHO, and the piezo makes it another axe all together. I don't believe you can beat that if only comparing the two.

3. I own 3 JP's, so my opinion will be biased and it is so for a reason. The feel of the JP is what sold me more than anything else, the tone and sustain are top notch (as it IS built for JP....and they are all built to his specs) and the best part is in my fourth point....

4. The Customer Service and reputation of EB's Customer Service is simply THE BEST in the business. So much so, the employees of EB and the owner, Sterling Ball (Big Poppa on the forum) post regularly and bend over backwards, sideways, up and down for us.....the customer as well as their endorsed artists.

My opinion and it is only that....you will sincerly enjoy the JP for the reasons stated above. I will not trash the Les Paul as it does have it's place in history, but it does not do, IMHO what the JP can do.

My 2 pennies.

Hey Koogie,

And I'll second that motion.

You won't be disappointed if you go with the JP.

Koogie is right.

I have had a Les Paul from new and it has a limited tonal range. It's a heavy instrument too and the necks are suspect to breakage. There's always one in my mates workshop having its neck fixed.

The tone controls are all or nothing.

Try one and play it standing for 40 minutes - see how you feel about them then.

IMO get yourself an Albert Lee instead.

Mine rarely gets played nowadays but It travelled a hell of a lot and I will not part with it.

Would I buy another........ no

I sold my Gibson to pay for my 1st Steve Morse Model. Then I went to the music store to buy another Gibson but I couldn't even find one I like. I have never missed the Gibson. Since then I bought a JP piezo as well. Still don't miss the Gibson.
I just love the EBMM guitars. Have you tried a SiLO?

In addition to everything that's been said (EBMM quality/support is better, etc.) there are some physical differences to consider.

The EBMM scale lengths are a little bigger than the Les Paul - 25.5 vs 24.75. (The classic Fender vs Gibson difference. I like the larger scale.)

Construction differs: bolt-on neck vs. one-piece. (I prefer bolt-on: the EBMM joint is rock-solid and your neck is always replaceable if need be.)

Another huge difference is the neck finish- with the LP you're getting a finished neck. With an EBMM you're getting oiled and waxed wood - waaaaaay smoother finish that's much easier to play. But everyone has a preference, and some prefer a finished neck.

Add to that the fact that the JP has a trem, etc. and they're totally different monsters.

I'd take EBMM any day of the week, but I sure am biased :D

There have been a few reports of a new(ish) MM on the block that is rumored to be an "LP killer". Won't know for certain until some forumites get their hands on one and report back...

What would that be, precisely?

And as an owner of a JP6, I'd say go with the Music Man. I still can't get over just how good a guitar it is.

hey welcome

Since Gibson is not a ****ty brand around and it has only been one GIBSON out there in the market so I would say Gibson and MM are both really good. It depends on your preference. You should try them all to see which one is your cup of tea. But among the MM models i prefer Axis cauz it feels & sounds just better for my style( Metal stuff). again, its your choice. they are both brands with PERSONALITY!and you do too, right?:D

Must give props to the author... but I did see this somewhere else too. (Forum NAMM reports probably) If two people say it, it must be true. :D However Dargin adds a solid dose of credibility to the rumors.

Stand on high and preach the gospel of the 20th Anniversery Silhouette!!!! WOO HOO!!!

(Kinda excited to get mine....is it obvious? )

Brother NoRm, can I get a hell yeah!!!???!!!!:D

Pete, you're on the hook for the first color commentary.....or NoRm or which ever forumite gets one first. Maybe jonguitarz can chime in too.

We now return you to the regularly scheduled thread. (Sorry for the tangent)

Only thing is the 24 fretter will sound different in the neck position than an LP.

I'd get both, but thats just me ;o)

(** Then again the AXIS would give you that**)

Only when they're dropped, because of the angled headstock. They don't spontaneously break.
