For some-odd reason, this photo is quite disturbing to me.

Is it that they are right or is it that they dictate what people buy by what they order???

i agree with Steve here. I think huge guitar retailers (GC etc) do play a role in likes/dislikes the same way that MTV does. really big entities can influence pop culture and opinion. If MTV starts playing hip hop, then it gets popular - if rap/metal get a hint of popularity MTV will latch on and "blow it up" ... same thing happened with punk a while back.

There's a small set of people who are immune to this. this is the small set of folks that really, really know what they like and seek it out. To me that's punk rock, ebmm guitars/basses etc. But most people out there have stuff "shown" to them and dont have a strong opinion - you can influence them. show them enough 50 cent or Fallout Boy and they'll get into it. do all the people that were fed Pearl Jam still listen to them?

Some things can become a self fulfilling profecy

Ok nice Hi Jack/Steve

1. Do the build stats lie?We have over 5 million builds since the old builder was launched. People love to talk about wanting a color but black and natural is 50% of what we make.

2. Steve you are a lucky dealer that does not have any inventory requirements from us. The only one. Its easy to throw stones but GC has over 1,000 basses chain wide bought and paid for. GC was the first to jump on many colors...Blue Dawn, Copper, Lava Pearl, Desert Gold ,graphite pearl most of the sparkle colors so its kind of an uninformed judgement there. Also factor in 50% of our business is international and they are much more conservative in purchasing.

3. GC and other larger retailers create the opportunity for you and Jack to service the players that want somthing special by limiting the SKU's they sell. You are able to take custom orders , take real good care of the customer and it is a win win.

Back to Dargins Ox Bile Bongo..........

First, I agree with you but will play devil's advocate for sport.

1. "People love to talk about wanting a color but black and natural is 50% of what we make."

This is what I was talking about a few posts back. I realize my view of the world is a type of tunnel vision. When I don't analyze it too seriously, I let myself believe that our little group, here and at the Pit, is representative of bassists everywhere.

But we're not, I don't think. We're fanatics, to an extent. Perhaps to a LARGE extent.

Many of us like to have things that set us apart. (See: Heinz.) It seems to me that most bassists really want sunburst, black, natural. Even at the Pit, that seems to be true.

So yes, I sit here and have martinis with Ray or John Worthington or whoever, and we go back and forth about green basses....but we're an even smaller demographic within a group of fanatics. And we're old codgers, too.

I have nothing to say about hair loss.

Jack

I can appreciate a nice oddball color here and there, but when it comes down to it,my black/black/(birdseye) maple sterling is perhaps the most beautiful bass ive ever seen ;)

Yup and it's one niche I will happily fill until people realize they can also custom order anything they want from the larger retailers as well.

you are right but 40% of GC's orders are custom

Jack...As i have said many times if I ran this company exclusively on die hards I would make martini olive green basses with flats standard. I would also be asking you if you wanted fries with it. You guys are very important but need to realize that you are in the top 5% and the other 95% may want something different than you do.

We start each month and Guitar Center gets their 20%, the exporters get their 50% an the indies get 30%...THE NUMBERS ARE THE SAME! People drool over the candy red and buy the sunburst.

Steve I get it but there was a veiled shot in there. I wonder what Pete's take is on this as he has many in inventory........

I mean look at the leap of faith you showed with the Buttercremes? It got a little hairy at the end...the LE's and 30th you put your sack on the line, I hope that you get the support you need.

The Ox Bile Bongo sure is ugly, but it's still sexy because of the shape.
Black and natural = 50% ? Wow, that makes my choice (trans. teal w/rosewood) quite exotic!
Is there any possibility to go public with the building stats. ?
It would be really interesting to know.:)

we can go public with them in all coutries buy Norway. Just kidding. We kind of like to keep this internal. Only a few get it and GC and Steve and Jack are some of the only people outside of EB hat get the info...They are told to deep the exact specifics confidential
