a smaller version would be cool for a little practice amp in the bedroom..but i wouldn't use it for anything more than that

JL, what are you going to use it for? Home use or playing out?

If it's for home, then the straight Flextone 3 is a great amp and will do the job.
If it's for playing out, then from what everyone has said, get the XL, stereo and direct out jacks, costs a bit more, but I hear that it's well worth it.

The Flextone 3 is a great amp with tones of setting, but they take a lot of tweaking and that means that there is a ton of time involved. Goto the Line6 forum and just read.

Have you played on yet? If you are looking for a practice amp, then you might consider the Spider 2's. They are small and they don't need as much tweaking.

Hope this helps, Glenn |B)

Well I had one for like 6 months, it's great amp, but I'm a suck player (if I can even call myself a player). I ended up selling mine, it was just a Flextone 3 and getting a Spider 2 112, which is waht I was going to get in the first place, but I got such an awesome deal on the Flextone 3 that I couldn't pass it up.

If you are getting the Flextone 3, then be sure to try it with the FBV Shortboard or the new FBV Express. The foot board is a must with those amps. You can get the foot boards on EvilBay, but you never know maybe you can work a deal with where ever you buy it from.

Keith has an original one I think and he loves it. He'll probably chime in later on.

Good luck, Line 6 stuff is awesome. Glenn |B)

What's up Jr. Luke. You really do look like the guy himself. I'm actuall gonna see a show with him in NYC on the 29th. Well anyway, I dunno about the Flextone, but I have a Spider 2. I am REALLY starting to dislike it more and more. The digitalness just doesnt sound good to me anymore. My ears are evolving at and exponential rate, so I will HAVE to get some nice tube amp. My choice for that so far is the Joe Satriani amp combo. But still, I'm pretty sure that the Flextone is better than the Spider. What about the Vetta 2? Isnt that even better than the Flextone? I dunno, I'm just rambling pointlessly  . Got nothin else to do at work lol.

Alls I use of late is L6 stuff ampwise....to be honest, it's not always the gear, but the player....if you know how to dial in sounds you can get good sounds going on on anything...

Jr. Luke, it's my first time seeing the guy. I actually dont even know that much of his music (OH NOOOO!!! :p ), but I'm sure it'll be good. The only thing that SUX about this venue is that it is all seating in front of a stage. It's a small and intimate place, but the owners decide randomly when it's seated and when not. I've seen Steve Morse there twice, and once it was open floor and the recent one was seated ( ). See, December 1st is actually going to be Malmsteen at the same place, but this time it is open floor. Crazy NYC! Anyway, if I get to talk to Luke or somethin I'll say hi for you.
Hey OC, I know what you mean about the dialing in. The Spider 2 does have all kinds of decent sounds, but just not for me. I LOVED the amp for a while actually, but like I said my ears are evolving. I have been playing for about 5 years, which is NOTHING, but still I am attempting to become a professional musician. I have been dialing all kinds of stuff for ages. It's just that digital sound and the attempted recreation of a tube amp. I mean still, after all eveyone has their own taste and ear. That's why after all there is gazillions of different amps, and almost no one on this forum itself has the same gear. Meaning amps. Guitars are a different story :D ;) .

Does take a bit of tweaking, especially with cabs and channel volume (at least on the FT II), but I'm sold (like OC and Koogs among others here).

Can't recall if the III has a 1X12 model or not. But at about 50 lbs., the Flextone II 1X12 ain't so bad/heavy.

You can find them used at pretty reasonable prices, too.

I agree with Keith, it takes some time to tweak. You need to find the right match between you guitar pickups and the all the settings: EQ, Speaker/Mic and most importantly the various channel/gain settings. It's best to crank the amp to 5 or 6 and back the channel volume down. Balancing all the patches out to a consistent volume is where the time investment is. The free L6 Edit software and TweakWizard help make this easier. Both require the midi connection. I believe all Flex's have the Midi Connection. The Plus model has the stereo XLR outs.

I used the POD 2, Flex 2 and Flex 3 to gig with for about 3 years. I have gone back to tubes recently but will use a POD at home for practice and recording. For giggin it does give you very clean and easy set up.

Cons - time to tweak, some patches with some guitars will sound more digital, to my ears the sound was very directional coming from a 1x12. Maybe the XL w/2x12 overcomes this. The 1x12 models, at least the Plus version offer a speaker out connection. The L6 board and the Institue of Noise forum have a ton of info on questions of getting a good sound out of the amp.

Junior Luke, I am selling my Flex 3 Plus and Shortboard. Contact me offline for more info if you are interested

www. thecoverdolls.com under the Musci link has some live gig recordings with the Flex 3. The guitar I am using is either a Strat, Morse or L6 Variax. The Variax created the most "digital" sound of the 3. I never did eq the various models for each patch so that could have been the reason.

Had a PODXT Pro didn't like it at all. You turn it up too loud and it even sounds worse. Real thin lead tone. I was running it through a Mesa Boogie 2:90 as well with two recto cabs. Get a tube amp.

I disagree - I play the xt thro a Marshall tube amp and the sound is incredible.

Well everybody is entitled to their own opinions. The clean tones are amazing on it but the distorted tones are just a giant wall of mush where you can't even tell if you hit a bad note. I prefer the old Boogie sound myself where you can still hear every note when you hit a chord. I already mentioned the lead tone on Line 6. You put a 100% tube amp rig right next to a Line 6 and tell me what sounds better. You don't get the same kind of sweet harmonic overtones and warmth you get with a 100% tube amp setup. You get some cheap artificial version. If Line 6 was so great everybody would be using them in my opinion. Far as I know people are still recording with tube amps why do you think that is??? Cus they kick ass!!!

That is your opinion and you are certainly entitled to it....however, I use a Line 6 Vetta II that will put most tube amps to shame.....you just have to spend some time and tweak it in.....by the way, I know several people who use Line 6 products and record strictly with it. So, it doesn't suck as much as you say. I do love tube amps as well, but, if you were not successful in using Line 6, that does not make it a bad unit. Several peeps on this board use Line 6 without any problems. It is all in how you set it up. I have heard several people with Mesa Roadkings sound like garbage.....so much for the tube amp. It is in how you set things up.....simple as that. Either way, play what you want.....I love the tube amps as well as my Line 6.

Koogie,
I had the PODXT Pro for almost a year. Tweaked it and tweaked it even upgraded to the latest firmware with the eq. I actually thought it sounded good for awhile but I still felt like there was something missing I guess I had tone amnesia.HA HA HA! Anyways what made me step back and say man what the heck was I thinking was I went to Guitar Center one day and back in the boutique amp room they had a little Mesa Boogie Mark IIC+ combo amp one without the EQ even and that little thing blew my whole Line 6 out of the water. It had all the nice overtones and warmth the Line 6 was missing and the lead tone was PHAT man! I can't comment on the Vetta I only messed with it for a couple minutes but I have heard its basically the same thing as the PODXT Pro just has more options. Trust me I would have loved the Line 6 to be one and only amp and effects I need. It's a pain toting around a 20 space rack if I wanna play out or whatever. I guess if you like Nu-Metal this amp could work for you but I'm not into that whole scene at all. If you have some clips or links to bands that have recorded with it lemme know I would like to hear what kind of sounds they got from it. Oh by the way you mentioned the Road King have you heard one personally I have been thinking about trying one out. I have heard you can get all the classic Boogie tones and some of the new ones too. I tried the Lonestar and it sounded great too.

It's all in your ears, hands and guitar. Plenty of people sound great playing through solid state Crate amps, and plenty of people sound horrible playing through expensive tube amps. I'm very much of the opinion that you can dial in good sounds on just about anything if your ears are good at it, and you know the gear.

Having said that, I personally prefer tube. Though, I wouldn't mind having a good SS amp for practices and just for general, throwing in the car kind of a thing. Instead of lugging a heavy amp everywhere.

Yo Brett.....I have heard and messed with the Roadkings. AWESOME amps to say the least. I have always been a Mesa fan....great amps. I like the Splawn's as well.....more hot rodded and gives you a great "brown sound"....however, I will admit, I like simplicity. I like to have all my eggs in one basket if you will. The Vetta II lets me have that. I tote one amp and my guitars and I am set. I used to run a Marshall with some stomp boxes....great amp and thought I found my tone. But, I find the Vetta II lets me get the tone I am after because it lets me run two amps at once. I use a clean amp and a dirty amp at the same time and it works great for me. Again, that is what works for me. I know where you are coming from with tube analogy. Believe me, I love good old fashion tube amps. I just find that I can get soo much more with my Vetta. A good place to start with hearing some great stuff through Line 6 would be OrangeChannel. I know him personally, and he runs through it. Check out some of his recordings....awesome stuff. I have put out a few myself using Line 6. I will get my friend's bands CD, PM me your address, and I will send it to you. More of the 80's type of music, influences are VH, Ratt, Crue, and the like with some blues flair thrown in. My friend is the guitarist and he used my Vetta to record with. If you want, I will send it to you. If you don't like the sound.....cool, but you get a free CD of some decent music. You can't beat that eh? ;)
