After using my Geddy Jazz with EMGs as a main recording bass for years (great for studio, not the best live bass), I sold it and got some EBMM Stingrays which not only record wonderfully, they are great live basses too.

Check out some studio recordings on my band (the Farstar) with the Stingray:

"I'm on Fire", "Airtight" and "the Healing Kiss of a Blowtorch".

On the track "I'm on Fire" I really wanted that zingy, punchy stingray tone, and I think I nailed it.. makes me regret not recording other stuff with the Ray sooner.

Stingray-->digitech xtortion--->zoom B2 (used for light limiting, very barely EQ, very barely chorus)--->manley compressor--->tape.

Thanks! i love my distorto stingray tone on "I'm on Fire". I dialed the treble back a little for the other songs.

I had usually recorded with a jazz to great results, and used my 77 p-bass with EMGs live.

I tried briefly using a stingray 4-string back in 2003-2004 in my indie rock band for live use, but it's sound didn't mesh as well with the 1st album's material, and I sold it.

because the p-bass really doesn't lend itself to modern church music, i bought a 5 string stingray around 2005. It really excelled as a perfect church and cover band bass, but the p-bass just still sounded better in my indie rock band, and the jazz bass still recorded way better too.

I decided to give the stingray 4 string another shot almost 2 years ago. BINGO! it really worked in both live and studio on the newer stuff, even better than the jazz and p-bass.

Wow,what a tone in "I'm on fire" is there any chances that you remember your eq settings on your bass and amp as well ? Type of strings or anything that could get me close to that tone with my Stingray? Is it a 3 band or 2 band eq and maple or rosewood fretboard?

Hey ,i know i'm asking alot but it's the tone i'm trying to nail (the sound in my head)no kidding!

And that song's is realy something too,wish you guys luck with that album.

i have 2 of the 4 string stingrays single pick-up. the newer (compensated nut version) tobacco sunburst rosewood fingerboard version, and an older autumn sparkle fade with maple fretboard.

i took one day, and i literally went to every music store in DFW and tried every single new and used stingray and sterling in H, HH, HS. after putting every one through the paces. the tobacco sunburst stingray one was the winner by light years and i bought it. it is literally the best stingray i've ever heard or played. it became my new #1 live bass. even sold my jazz and jag bass to get it.

a few months later i stumbled onto the used autumn sparkle fade. i love the discontinued color and couldn't pass it up. i really needed a 2nd stingray just in case i ever broke a string live so there wouldn't be a drastic change of basses. i had to part with my pj and other p bass for it (still kept my 77 pbass)

for the studio, i used the sparkle bass (even though the tobacco sunburst sounds better). i used my digitech xtortion and a slight bass and treble boost, some compression/limiting helps too. studiowise i use a manley and a pick (i use fingers live), but i can pretty much nail my studio tone live with my gk800rb into an ampeg 115 cab or gk 212 neo. i use a zoom B2 for effects. i like the stingray live because if i feel i am too bright or too woofy in the room, i can add or cut a bit.
