Well, the Schecter Koa experiment results are in: Me No Likey.:)
It was between this, an SG, or a MM (Luke or 20th Ann.) We all make mistakes.
The Schecter I purchased is absolutely beautiful, but ultimately isn't what I'm looking for as a player. The guitar is very bright sounding, something I don't care for. I spent over $1500 on this thing only to go back to playing my little $400 Gibson Melody Maker or my Carvin.
The neck profile is a 12" U shape, which I thought I would like. Wrong! Too small, perhaps. My Gibby has a 12", but is C shaped; the Carvin is a 16" and is very flat and wide. I would like to find a neck inbetween those two. I am going to stick to the feel of rosewood (board) also as my schecter has birdseye maple.
So, now I have to sell it and start my search all over again. The good thing is I know exactly what I like and now I just have to find it. Perhaps you friendly guys can help:

Contoured body comfortable to play seated or standing
Preferably a light guitar (weight)
Neck that is comfortable for chording and solo runs
a neck that has that "it plays itself" feeling
Rosewood fretboard
Mahagony or basswood body (nothing bright)

Thanks guys! I guess I should have listened to you more (see Title of post).

Sorry to hear that! Yeah, live and learn.

Before you ditch it, you can darken up the sound without too much work. Try swapping in some lower resistance pots. E.g. if it has 500k pots, drop in 250ks. Or you can add a small capacitor at the output to shift the frequency emphasis a bit lower.

But if you don't like the neck, then mabe that's that.

Can you say "Silhouette?"

You just spec'd a JP. That would be the one you want.

But, if you can try out any others, I say do that as well. You never know, the silo is good as well as the Axis, Y2D.....but I really think you are after a JP.

I haven't had the guitar for more than 3 weeks. Drumlandcityguitar has a beautiful black JP6. Do you guys think it would be out of place to ask for an exchange of the guitar this far out? I guess I'd take a hit off the price if I had to also, but not much (maybe like $100).
How is the trem on the jp6? Is it difficult to re-string/tune?
Thanks,

yeah but it sounds like he needs a little meat in his neck so make sure you play the JP first, I use a silo as my main guitar and its perfect, my axis are my second choices because I love the countours on the silos body but the axis is a basswood guitar which you like as well, the silo is alder but its the most comfy to play, I think the 20 ann silo might suit your needs, I played it and it sounds like a superstrat on roids, its alder with a mahogony block down the center and it has a maple top, go for that and dont look back, it meets all your specs -

My next step is to take some nice photos of the schecter and the carvin to post on ebay. There is a store about 30 minutes from me that just might have a JP6 to try out (unfortunately, that's the only MM they carry). You know where I'm going during my lunch. There is a store about 200 miles away that I may venture out to on Saturday and I believe they may have many more MM's to choose from.
But damn, that Black JP6 on drumlandcityguitar.com looks sweet.
Bringing back the subject of the Schecter having a small neck. It's weird. I have small hands with short, stubby fingers. I've always thought that a smaller neck would just suit me better. That's one of the reasons I'm suprised at the Schecter. I mean it's comfortable, but the spacing is tighter compared to the Melody Maker and especially compared to the Carvin. And sometimes I prefer the Gibson and at other times the carvin, but ultimately would like to find something in between.
What would be great is an SG neck, but treated with EB's oil and wax!

Try an Axis or Steve Morse too. I like the meatier necks of Gibsons as well and I've found that the Axis and Steve Morse have meatier feeling necks compared to the JP/Silhouettes. Just my 2 cents.. Again, subjective stuff, they all have that "plays itself feeling" so try before you buy! I've been lucky to play several EB models in stores and the Axis Super Sport was the only one that spoke to me eventhough I am typically a single coil guy! Try and live with the guitar a little bit too..I thought I wanted to trade my Super Sport for a single coil MM initially, but now you won't be able to pry it off my hands! :D

Well, I called that music store today before I went out there. They sold the one and only JP they had. Now, however, they have a steve morse model, but not the Y2D. I might go check it out.
Thanks,
darchirnoj
on another note, I'm trying to play the heck out of the schecter to get more of a feel. Ehhhhh, it doesn't feel natural, kinda trying to force myself to like it, but it just ain't happenin'.
I'm playing it unamplified, because I know amplified it sounds pretty good. Although it is bright, my issue has more to do with the way it feels in my hands.

You can't go wrong with the Morse

Well, I just got back from trying out the Morse; first time to play an EB. Very nice. The guitar was light and comfortable to play. What amazed me was all of the tones one could pull out of the guitar via the p/u configuration; that was pretty cool. Re: playability, yeah it does feel closer to the melody maker I have probably because of the rosewood fretboard. Although it was very comfortable to play, I couldn't quite feel a difference from this neck (I believe these are oiled/waxed) and a satin finish. Very nice guitar, but it had a floyd and I'm not to crazy about trems (which is why I had asked about the JP trem).
