Went to see an Iron Maiden tribute band here in Phoenix on Sat night, and the "Steve Harris" was playing a HH Bongo which looked candy apple, but the club was dark.

He did an excellent job on playing the Harris parts, and fingerstyle even.
 
Sweet. I've often thought I've been able to recreate the Harris clank from the first few albums pretty closely with a bit of bias towards the neck and some fiddling with boosted mids.
 
I never saw any bongo in my area, neither in a shop nore in a gig. Must be the only bongo owner in this part of france.
I must say, that there were I live, you have to place special orders to have the latest things out on the market (hum, bongos are on production since end 2003...) ; the shops rarely have them in stock (you have to go to Paris if you want to find them). So I rather just cross the frontier and go in some german shops where you can find more actual instrument, to lower prices...The german market is really huge compared to france.

I'm sorry but any guy who shows up for any Iron Maiden tribute band gig audition without a P-Bass simply would not get the gig.

It's like showing up for a Cheap Trick tribute band gig without a 12 string or an AC/DC tribute band gig without a sunburst Stingray.

Just wrong for the gig...people do not go to tribute band gigs looking for something "new"...simple fact.

Agreed, 100%, as it relates to "tribute band"...

My thought is that the HH Bongo is so "in your face" I find it a perfect fit for aggressive hard rock / heavy metal.

Among other things, of course... :rolleyes:

Yep, I have to say that I agree. I can cop a PBass tone all day long with my Bongo (neck pickup with a little bit of piezos, slight low mid cut, high mid boost), but if it's a Maiden Tribute band, that boy better be playing a PBass.

Of course, if you aren't the Iron Maidens, you shouldn't bother being a Maiden tribute band to begin with...

funny thing is, I think one of the guitar players in this maiden tribute was previously in a Megadeth tribute in which one of the former Iron Maidens also played. Try and figure that out!

I totally agree, with the P-bass comment. I was expecting the whole show, you know, spandex pants, white high-tops, long hair, P-Bass, Strats, etc. That's what tribute means to me also.

But, it was Charvels & Bongo, new, generic Maiden T-shirts with the sleeves cut off, short hair and no Eddie running around during Hallowed Be Thy Name.

Musically, they were right-on, but they need to work on the show aspect.

Hmmm...that's a cover band, not a tribute band. A dubious distinction, but a distinction none the less.

He played a couple of different Ibanez Roadstars (a few Lados, too), but his main bass was, and is, an early 70s Fender PBass that he's had refinished quite a few times.


BTW--I can totally get the Steve Harris cloppity-cloppity tone with my Bongo when it's got flats on it. And, The Trooper never ceases being a fun tune to rock out to. :cool:

I've seen him playing other than a P in some videos, so I know he did, but yes, his main bass is a P. I think they even made a signature model for a very short time.

My Iron Maiden days ran from their beginnings until "Live After Death"...

Love "The Trooper" - I go three fingers to get the gallop...

Ring-finger, middle-finger, index-finger, repeat... :)
 
Yeah, Fender had a while back the Steve Harris signature, and if I'm not mistaking, it was a blue bass, but now Steve Harris plays almost always his white P, a very cool bass.
And I can't managa to play with 3 fingers, but I can play it perfectly with 2. The gallop thing seems to fit my style :D

Heh--the white bass used to be the blue bass. And, if two fingers is good enough for Steve Harris, it's good enough for you.

That reminds me...Fender never paid me for the use of this pic of mine as they agreed to when they used it in their catalog...musta got lost in the mail huh? Note the blurry right hand...I couldn't get a clear shot of his right hand to save my butt at any shutter speed.
