It IS a nice bass! Thanks to the folks that built it. The body size feels right to me, the neck feels comfortable, and stiff enough to really transfer those vibrations. Seriously good B string.

The Olive Gold looked more brown to me in other pictures, but I like it better greener. I would dare to say it has "Dargie-ish" qualities, there is a definite color change, but not nearly as drastic as a DDII. I had considered the Gold Swirl, but.... I guess that might be a little flamboyant for me.

Anyway, I'm on the fence about the fretless color. Electric Blue/Black pg?

May they never make a 6 string bass and paint it that color. My wife will kill me.

Brad that bass needs to be kept in a safe.

Ed is awesome!

Fanboy. LOL :D

The Sterling 5 is a bass I can't believe I don't own. Yet. I have loved, LOVED, every one I played.

Wow, that Olive Gold/Black pg combo is bad-ass. Previously, I'd only seen Olive Gold with the Gold Swirl pg. I have to say, the black really sets it off. That is REALLY nice looking. Congrats Ed, that's a real beauty.

And yeah, though I don't know Ed personally, and became aware of him here on the forum sometime in the last few years (20th SR5 review, initially), I'm also finding his recently (apparently) increased EBMM enthusiasm to be both noteworthy and (as a knucklehead) very cool. :)

Orange Firemist is another great semi-matallic color/finish with some color-shifting too ... mandarin orangish, reds, golds, coppers ... very nice. Looks great with a Vintage White Pearl pg. I think it'd look great with a fretless board.

And here are some more pics of that bass: OFM SR4

What is the string spacing at the bridge on the Sterling 5's?

I played a SR5 last week and thought the spacing was great.

Ed...HELLO? THe pickup is CERAMIC!!!!!!!!!! You are an expert and a traditionalist....Surely you have fallen and hit your head.......CERAMIC??????

When you have to fit accurate descriptions of 2 feature-laden, brand new, groundbreaking instruments into 800 words, you take shortcuts. WE know that the magnets are ceramic and not the entire pickup, but in most people's minds, they differentiate between "alnico pickups", "ceramic pickups" and "neo pickups". To anyone that knows the deal, it's a non-issue, and to those that don't know the deal.... I'm not given enough space to make the distinction for them.

It may not be 100% technically accurate to describe them that way, but it gets the point across in the least number of words. Something that is always top priority for Guitar World reviews. I get 800 words.... not much to talk about one bass, but try two!

Sometimes I have to make the tough choices BP, do I get into an involved description of the pickup construction (and a pickup type that has been available from EB for years no less) or do I talk about the new developments? I surely couldn't review the bass without mentioning the type of magnets... so I took a shortcut and called it a "ceramic humbucker".

Now, can we still be friends?
