Hi,
a dealer here in germany says that the Dimarzio Tone Zone are the exact pickups that were taken for the EBMM EVH and Axis. Is that correct? It´s because I´d like to put them in my Strat.

Thanks, Chris

As per FAQ on Dimarzio website, Tone Zone/bridge and Air Norton/Neck are the closest pickups to the ones in Axis.

They are not the same pickups. IMO the Tone Zone isn't even close. It's got a lot more output, it's muddier and I don't like it. The Air Norton is closer. It's a really good pickup.

Some love the Tone Zone. I did not. I put two of them in 3 different guitars and it was the same in all of them.

But I too confirmed with DiMarzio that these are the two closest pickups they make to what are in the Axis/EVH.

I would look outside DiMarzio.

Might I recommend the Bareknuckle VH2 ?

I've yet to hear one in a Musicman Axis but I've heard them in a couple of other guitars and they have an absolutely stonking sound to them, particularly in the bridge position.

So maybe you need a VH2 to go in the bridge and and an Air Norton for the neck ?

The Air Norton is closer to the EVH/Axis Neck Pickup? Or can I put the Air Norton in the bridge position, too? Has anyone tried this?

Sorry for any misunderstanding. The Air Norton is a neck pickup and I'm comparing it to the neck pickup in the Axis/EVH. There's nothing saying you couldn't try it in the bridge position. But I doubt it would sound anything like the EVH bridge pickup.

As many have pointed, the ToneZone is noticeably different to the Axis bridge. I have a guitar with the AirZone and it's much closer to the Axis bridge sound but with a tad less bass or thump.

My luthier tells me he thinks the Dimarzio Virtual Hot Paf is actually even closer, i have a guitar coming up soon with a pair of V-Hot Pafs in it. I might be able to tell you more then.

.

actually a 1/2 air zone is dead on
you make the stud pole coil full magnet strength and this does the trick
i defy anyone to tell me that the half air zone and the B1 EVH bridge pup dont sound exact in the same guitar and same amp:)

I agree. The Tone Zone isn't even close to the EVH bridge pickup. The EVH is much tighter and meaner sounding, less midrange.

I just sold a EVH Neck pickup on ebay a couple of weeks ago. It went for pretty cheap too.

for those that need to know Hbucker is correct the tone zone stock is not really like a EVH B1 dimarzio
the tone zone however can be made to sound exactly like it
if you have some basic pup working skills and now the fundamentals.
I mod all of my tone zones or air zones and they all sound EXACT to a EVH b1 bridge pup
the tone zone has the dual resonance design in that the two coils are not wound alike one is at 9.2K and theother at 8.6K
the B1 EVH has two matched coils both at 8.3K or so this varies as with all pups resitances
the tone zone has more output, bass and is much more over the top than the EVH B1.
to make a tone zone come down to the B1's more pafish open tone and feel
you have to make the stud side coil less hot this is the 9.2K hotter coil and it is what seperates the tone zone from the EVH
this is done by creating a "air gap" so that on that one side there is a gap between the magnets edge and the screws

what this does to a tone zone is remarkable to say the least it lowers the bass and output and makes the tone zone sound just like the EVH B1!
as far as the neck pup a regular NORTON is almost indentical to the N2 EVH neck pup in tone.
the air norton is sweet but lacks the power and creaminess of the EVH N2
the regular norton is better for this application.;)

The only thing I have to contribute to this discussion is that I must have an ASS, because it's so darn good!
