Looking at your collection I would tend to say get the SSS, because it adds something new.
That's what I would suggest, too. The Big Al H may give you the best H of your collection, but the SSS will give you something very new. It will not sound like a stingray or bongo, it's really unique, but you will recognize its sound as a Musicman's.

I've not played the H version. But have really enjoyed the SSS. Agree with Craig, its the best so far. Agree with BP, all buttons up active is a great aggressive tone. Agree with whoever that passive options provide sooo much tonal variety.

I think I have. Just look at my album in my profile.

Yep, Just checked it out...("ALsome") Great bass!
Killer fretless yellow bongo too...did you buy that from someone here on TB?
I was asking a guy here about a yellow fretless lined bongo he posted pics of.
I asked if he wanted to sell it , let me know.
He mentioned selling it to someone in Germany.
Would be funny if that was the same bongo.

Yep seems like that will become the plan of attack.
Buy the SSS Big AL....
Want to search out a mint used one for a fair price.
The hardest part is letting go of one Ray to fund the Big Al purchase...
I more or less have fine tuned my lineup and really cannot see letting go of any of them ....
hahaha!! yikes.
Really looking forward to getting one of these....thanks :)

Because of this thread I took the BA 4 SSS to band rehearsal yesterday and was blown away again. I went mainly passive, with neck and middle and middle and bridge in parallel for a nicely overdriven deep 60ies fingertone. Very nice.

And yes the fretless Bongo you mentioned has a long list of owners out of the forum. Do a search for the smalleq Bongo. Smallequestrian was the first owner. Very nice Bass.

Hey that's awesome the thread got you to take the BA to practice again....Very cool!
Funny how it has been passed around the forum...I love my two Bongos ALOT!
I do not play fretless...but if I was to buy one to tinker around with...and keep for a decent amount of time....I am thinking I would want it to be a Bongo....Maybe I will search out a Bongo HS fretless? Being as my Lava Pearl Bongo is an HH and the Dargie is an H :)

Here's the best Big Al clip I've seen from Bass Central

Musicman Big Al Bass Guitars

Incredibly rich harmonic content and 1 million tones.
I'm told the player is a man called Grasshopper; monster player + monster bass = Amazing

I own a Big Al 4SSS and love its versatility. I'm sure the 4H is great too but IMHO would lose a lot of tonal options.

Plus who can resist playing a bass that has a pickup configuration like a Strat?!?

Everything that has been said here is 100 % right. The BA SSS is a very versatile bass. Loads of tone and the neck is super fast and playable. I had mine out for a gig the day after I bought it and there was no learning curve in using it. Felt super natural and oozed awesomeness, and this was after playing F#@(*$s for 15+ years. There is definitely something special about the "all buttons up" in active as BP suggested. This is MM tone on a speedball.

I have the clone of Celkirk's BA. Amazing bass!

I think having to decide to part with any MM bass would be tough because they're all quality. Maybe the Natural Blonde HS??? You have the LE with the same configuration, less the maple board....but as always that's up to you...I hate unloading gear myself, but love putting new tools in the shed. Choices....

My new signature quote if that's ok?

permission granted! im honored. the big al was a total revelation for me. as soon as i laid hands on these axes, i instantly knew i was not alone on the planet, and had much in common w its creators. i was like..."dig.... someone else gets it. these cats are clearly smokin the same dope, and own the rights to epic tone. i will now stalk them, until they agree to hang out with me. i'd bet $100 they got otis redding and thin lizzy on their ipods."
