Yep that's right. I sold the stock pups and need another set. I own two of them. I have my trusty Amber Axis that has been my #1 for almost 10 years and I use my other Axis in my other band which is a little more 'heavy'

I have tried a JB (hated it), a D Sonic (hated it more) and now I have a Super Distortion in it (not diggin' it either)

We play in Eb and I'm looking for something in the Dimarzio line that will be tight yet somewhat forgiving when playing single notes above the 12th fret.

Here are my considerations...

1. Norton - I've heard great things about these but they dont seem very popular
2. AT-1 - however this I heard sounds pretty much like the stock Axis pups? idk
3. Steve's Special - I heard these are supposed to be closest to the original Petrucci models. Again, idk

I dont like spikey mids or piercing highs. I like warn fat tone with just enough cut...if that makes sense

help me out guys!

Thanks!

Doesn't Dimarzio recommend an Air Norton in the neck and an AT-1 in the bridge to get close to the EVH pickups?

You could look out for a set of Peavey Wolfgang pups. I know it may sound like sacrilege but they come up on ebay more often than original axis pups and have a similar mojo yet not identical although they are fairly hot and fat with a fair amount of mids (the wolfies always seem very unsubtle to me, but in a nice way!). Just a thought.

Hello T-Bone,

I like your avatar...do you have an ebmm like that? I almost bought an axis that had been striped and the toggle switch had been relocated to the evh location. It was nice, but priced at evh prices and I was only willing to pay axis prices.

Check bareknuckle pickups, send them an email telling them what you're looking for and they will promptly come back telling you what they have that fits the bill.

Are you buying your pups new and taking advantage of the 30-day return policy from Dimarzio? They do great phone over there in my experience.

I have 36ths in my Axis, but it gives a more vintagey SG flavor, not sure that is what you are looking for.

I'm surprised you're not diggin the SuperD, what is it you don't like?

The smoothest Dimarzio offering above the 12 fret IMHO is the Morse neck model - flip to the neck when working up high and all is good.

If you are going to consider the BKP's...

BKP are great. I went with a set of Rebel Yell HumBuckers in a PRS Singlecut SE and they really are a gnarly set of pickups, especiallyl in the Bridge position. They can get nice and chimey in the neck position too. The RY's have a nice organic but modern sounding tone, an 'in your face' raunchy rock tone. Not as dark sounding or compressed as some other pickups.

I'm not saying that the Rebel Yells are what your looking for, but the guys at BKP can definitely help you out.

Cheers,

Tom
