I watched a review of the 25th on Youtube from World Guitars in England.
He mentioned that if a neck has too much birdseye it makes it weak and can be a problem?

I have some very highly figured birdseye necks...

a Quarter sawn clear piece of maple is optimum....BUT I love the review and production of their review and they are a fine dealer but I totally disagree with their opinion that is stated as fact. We see no issues in production or frequency of warranty claims due to excessive birdseye...if we did we wouldnt use it.

Hi BP
Thanks for replying.
I thought that it was a rather suspect claim because I know you would not put out a product if that was the case! I just thought I would clarify the matter as it made me think about it since I saw the video.

It's true! VERY true!!!

Also - this buddy of mine went to Vegas - got drunk - woke up in a tub full of ice - his whole side was stitched up. Turned out he got too drunk and someone stole one of his kidneys. TRUE!

Interesting. I do believe BP, in that I am sure birds eyes are fine for guitars. I sure don't expect to see my 20th falling apart under the tension of the guitar strings.

Has CS ever received a call about a guitar falling apart because of birds eye?

Has CS ever received a call about a guitar falling apart, period? :D

Seriously. Birdseye isn't going to do anything except make your guitar look awesome. Sure, a quartersawn neck is best, but it just doesn't look as good.

The beautiful Birdseye necks are why people buy Music Man guitars to begin with, and its almost a trademark of their guitars.I can't think of anyone else who does this better when it comes to necks.

Iknow the EBMM Nija Man and he has some excellent examples of AAA necks.

I wonder if the gentlemen in the video knew of an actual cases where birdseye caused neck issues...or if this was something they "heard".

The neck on my Dargie is generously peppered with birdseye and I'll bet the farm that the neck on my Dargie will be just as solid in 25 years as it is now.

Gotta love the Internet.

Anybody know how birdseye forms?

From Wiki:

Bird's eye figure is a phenomenon that occurs within several kinds of wood, most notably in maple (bird's eye maple). It has a distinctive pattern that resembles tiny, swirling eyes disrupting the smooth lines of grain. It is somewhat reminiscent of a burl, but it is quite different: the small knots that make a burl a burl are missing.

It is not known what causes the phenomenon. Research into the cultivation of bird's eye maple has so far discounted the theories that it is caused by pecking birds deforming the wood grain or that an infecting fungus makes it twist. However, no one has demonstrated a complete understanding of any combination of climate, soil, tree variety, insects, viruses or genetic mutation that may produce the effect.

You have to watch out for flamed maple too- if the grain is too defined you can burn your hand badly when playing your guitar. I must, admit, I've not come across any hard evidence yet... but I think I read something about it in a forum :D

I love the bull that circulates on the internet about guitars. Makes me smile.

Matt....very nice reply and thanks for it.

BP and company know what they doing and if they ever thought bird's eye was bad they would not use it. Let's be real here....BP and company...Dudley in particular...have been building guitars for many many years. They are not going to use a product that would be defective. IF and I use that word cautiously...IF they thought it would be problem they would have found it by now. They are true professionals of their craft. Period. Dudley is a design genius and to think he would short cut anything is simply disrespectful. Not to say you or anyone was....just know he knows what he is doing. Think about this...flame or maple tops are used by every guitar/bass manufacturer out there......are they all "defective". Absolutely not. I have never seen proof of flame/quilt or bird's eye being defective or causing problems. Great discussion...but....I think we are all good. Bring it on...the more flame/quilt/bird's eye...the better.

My morse neck is absolutely covered in birdeye's and as only ever been set up once , it is totally stable but has a lacquered neck so that might be keeping it in check.
