Hi Knuckleheads,

I'm in love. My trusty SR5 is definitely the best bass I ever owned (over 30+ through 30+ years). I took it to the luthier on Wednesday, and while changing the strings he did her a supermegahypratop setup.

I had never given a name to any of my basses, but at this point, due to this huge love I feel for her, I decided to do it : called her Laila (and if you really wanna know the reason why, it's here).

And you, friends, how do you call your lovely EBMMs ?

Cheers,
Jean

I actually came to the same realization last and decided that i'd name my trusty SR5 (my trans red one). Her new name is Candice.

So I have 2 named, Candice and Heinz. The others will earn their names. :D

Jean, that is such a great bass.

I've always liked honeyburst with rosewood, too.

I should have kept this one:

Yes, they are. Your pics look like the exact same as mine, which also is the exact same as the previous one I had purchased back in 2002. I'm also a big fan of that colour combo, especially on the 5er.

BTW, Laila really needed that BIG setup. The strings were way too close to the neck on the nut side, and way too far away from it on the body side. And yes, on the nut side I had some fret buzz sometimes. Relief issue, I guess.

Well, you know how that happens. You live in a region like mine where daytime is hot and dry, and nighttime has some freshness and humidity in the air. So you take your car and drive to the outdoor gig. You arrive and install your gear on stage. Then you do the soundcheck. Then your bass remains on stage, and even protected it is STILL in a hot and dry atmosphere until the night comes. Then you play your 4 hours gig. There are smoke machines on stage (well it's actually vapor). All this creates big variations in temperature and hygrometry. And you do that 15, 20, 25, sometimes 30+ times per Summer. Then at the end of the season, your bass is in big need of a setup.

So the guy did a huge job. The strings were in a need of a changing. The guy generally uses GHS Boomers but I demanded to mount EB 2836. I brought them to him, and I only paid for the setup, not the setup and the strings (which I had bought).

When I retrieved Laila a few hours later, I had a hard time to believe that was her. Just as new (except that tiny and almost invisible ding on top of the body). Shiny and perfectly setup. Drove 200 miles for that, but I don't regret at all. That guy is the cream of the crop in the luthiers department in my region.

That is a beautiful color combo w/ the rosewood, I agree... and a beautiful "inspiration" for the name. A name has got to make the instrument play better, right?

I'm happy I decided to put a black guard on it.

And for bass names, no, I do not name them. The one pictured above would be the honeyburst StingRay5. I guess they go by model and colour for me.
