LTD collectibility?

I know that when the Buttercreams were discontinued some stores wouldn't sell the remaining stock with any discount off the RRP so in theory they have gone up in a short period of time.

I understand where teonigil is comin' from. Looking around, it does appear there are more "limited" run models for that given year then "standard" instruments.
However, looking at the big picture, if you're only producing LE models for one given year, then some day they will be rare.

I don't own a LTD Musicman, but my Warwick Hot Rod is numbered 5/123. I don't honestly know if this makes it worth anymore, but I think that if I ever do decide to sell it down the track, I would be able to hock it for a hell of a lot closer to its original price than a standard model.

But why would you ever want to sell an LTD instrument! For me more of the joy is showing other musicians the little signature and number on the back of the headstock than saying "Oh, I bought such-and-such for $10000 and sold it for $15000!"

Or sell a MM at all. Trust me, I sold my beloved Burnt Apple Stingray in a moment of stupidity, and my life was incomplete until I finally realized what I had actually done and picked up another Stingray. I am once again at peace with myself and the world

That's because you hang out here and are exposed to the LEs more. So you get the perception that there are a lot of LEs (although their total production is eclipsed by regular MMs). The pattern is one LE per yr. 2006 with it's three LEs is an exception.

However, looking at the big picture, if you're only producing LE models for one given year, then some day they will be rare.

Buttercreams, 2005 only. Order window closed way before 2005 was over.

Blackgold 2006 only. Ditto. Order window is closed.

30th Ray 2006 only (on the 30th yr. imagine that). Order window closed.

DD 11 working days only. Yup, closed also.

I don't see a replay or reissues. Now if you're saying that LEs should only be made once in a great while then how do you stimulate sales?

Even Rickenbacker, notorious for making you wait for the tree to grow first so they can make you a bass, issues a COTY every year.

Very good point. Come to think of it, other than my '05 LE SR4, the only other i've seen was a SR5 LE at a local shop. The other day I saw a 30th Anv. at the local GC and that's it.
Regardless, my son will inherit mine one day, because I won't make the mistake of selling it.

I can't remember which numbers were signed by whom, but one of the 50 was signed by Big Poppa (worth more) and one of the 50 was signed by Wayne Gretzky. I imagine the Canadians liked that one!

probably one of the reasons we haven't numbered the past few Limiteds (and Anniversary models -- note: these are DIFFERENT. There will be a Limited each year, and we will commemmorate whatever anniversary there happens to be in a given year. 2006 just happened to be a year of two anniversaries...)

anyhow, back to one of the reasons we haven't numbered the past few Limiteds is:

a) because we leave the ordering window open for any given amount of time. The limited TIME is the key factor here, we don't say "we'll make xxx and xxx (or xxxx and xxxx) only";

b) and because we leave the ordering window open for a given amount of time, we don't know until the end of the ordering window how many we'll make;

c) therefore, we cannot number them x/xxx or x/xxxx because if we did we would have to store xxx or xxxx amount of instruments in the warehouse before shipping them out to you, the customers, and;

d) we all know how much you guys hate to wait for your Limiteds (and Anniversarys......and....regular MM's too....).

I mean, could you imagine??? Everyone would be saying "you mean MINE is finished, but I have to WAIT until you're done with all xxx of them?!?!"

Teo...Im not biting because you seen kind of confrontational today...but I will try to answer your whatever you call them.

1. the limiteds are truly that, I dont set a certain number because I want to try to make the dedicated fans of our stuff happy.

We sell more regular stuff that limiteds. But with over 80,000 combinations there are some rare pices that get built without any fanfare.

I think that you may be overwhelmed with the bonus stuff we have posted. It goes to show that no matter what you cannot please everyone. Most people seem to enjoy seeing stuf that the other companies go out of their way to hide from the general public. I do find it funny that you want to design the 20th sr5 and then criticize us for showing one offs

Now on the 20th SR5 I have posted that we will have one of those at January Namm 2007 along with a Sterling 5. Im sorry that it wont be what you designed for us but will have some features that you like. As I have said many times we approach anniversary instuments differently than most companies. Instead of re issuing something we try to create a bass that celebrates the original design whilst incorporating where we are today.

I'm workin' a deal with Jack and Steve for an '06 limited. I'm happy with the deal. I don't personally care how many guitars were produced for '06. I will own one and play one. I don't care what the re-sale value is, either. If I decide to move it, someone here will get a great bass, and I'll get a great bass back!

EBMM isn't numbering their limited basses (guitars). I don't see how they could from an everyday production company standpoint. I'm sure they will make limiteds every year for as long as it's fun and feasible, while the interest is there, but to interupt the daily goings with #'s wouldn't make sense or cents. Make 'em while there is a demand. The one I'm getting will work for me. Last years wouldn't. And like someone else said, I can brag about it.

Sell as many as you can. I feel fortunate enough to get one on the tail end. Mine is # 13. At least that's what I'm gonna tell the bandmates. I also haven't seen too many limiteds popping up for sale.

This was a fun year for sure....The LE's, 30th SR, 20th Silo, the DD....plus, the killer production line of guitars/basses.

I just feel lucky to be able to see these fine instruments in person, play them, and then decide what I wanted.

The one offs are just that. One offs. To those that complain, well, Big Poppa OWNS this place. He can get what ever he wants and that is one of the perks....why complain. I'm just happy he continues to show the same enthusiasm as me when it comes to guitars/basses. Plus, he did not ask for it. It was built for him by his son and Dudley. Good on them for that. Please continue to torture us with those one offs!

If you want a DD you can still hold one from Bass Central. They are asking for 25% non refundable down, and have several to choose. On another note I am really liking the 2006 black LTD myself and Jack has some great deals on them. Decisions, decisions...
