I saw Toto (and Yes) last night at the Red Butte Garden Amphitheatre in Salt Lake City. I did the meet & greet thing, and our experience was very similar to the write-up describing the Houston show.
In our group, however, was this guy with what had to be a guitar case. As I got closer, I realized it was a Music Man case and figured this guy must have brought his Luke to be signed by Luke.
During the sound check and Q&A, after a few questions had been asked, a guy says, "Can you play Jojo?" So the band starts playing and muddling through for about fifteen seconds, then stops, and Paich says, "The answer is 'no'." Haha.
Then the guy with the EBMM raises his hand and asks, "Can I play 'Holy War' (song off of Toto's latest album) on stage with you?" To my surprise, Luke tells the guy to come on up but that he has to play with Luke's guitar instead of his own (which I think was a trans black BFR LIII). So the guy goes up on stage, and Luke hands him his Blueberry, and I'm thinking "dream come true for this dude!" So the band launches into Holy War, and the guy plays, and he's pretty good. The band goes through most of the song and stops after the guitar solo, on which the guy did fairly well, although he was shaking a bit from nervousness. The entire time he was up there, Luke was encouraging and approving, and I think everyone (band included) was surprised at how good this guy's chops were. Paich even gave him a hug after they were done.
Later, during the autograph signing, Paich was saying to someone how this was the longest they had ever let anyone play through a song with them. (I guess this guy wasn't the first to go up on stage and play with them during sound check.)
I was talking to the guy afterward, and he was still pretty stoked about what had happened. I asked if he was on the forums, but said he wasn't, and I said he should be. He said he has two EBMMs: the LIII and a Majesty.
The moral to the story: Go ahead and ask! Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
Anyways, Toto played a good show, as always. Even though Yes is one of my favorite bands, I wish it had been just a Toto show, so they could have played a full set.
Catch them if you can! And the meet & greet package is definitely worth it.
