Hi fellow forumites,

like I stated in another thread, I want to buy myself a new all-tube amp for me and my Luke II.
After some testing, it looks like it's gonna be the new Marshall Vintage Modern 2x12" 50Watt Combo.

BUT: Somebody told me to take a look at their TSL 60 Head.
I did not have the opportunity to check it out so far, since no store anywhere near me seems to have it in stock.

Do any of you guys have experiences with this amp?

Seems like a good bang for the buck and since I am not totally, but a bit on a budget (I want an EBMM with a piezo system as well), it might be a good, if not a better alternative to the Vintage modern.

Thanks in advance for your 2 cents...!!!

i'd make sure the modern vintage works for you before you buy it. while it has switchable gain controls......it does share the same tone controls . i was kinda hot on this amp til i tried it out. the over the top distortion is really really nice . but to get i really nice clean sound .......i had to change the tone settings.

i adored the look of the amp !!!!
but sonically......... i was MUCH more impressed w/ the boogie lonestar special...

Interesting... since I do own a 2x12 cab as well and I would not need to buy an extra cab for the head, which is why I am eyeing the TSL 60 at the moment...

Vintage Modern - they're absolutely unlike anything else Marshall's ever done. I'd definately reccomend the JVM over the TSL anyday.

Thanks for the hint, Kyle!
I tried the JVM and I think it's a good amp BUT: they just raised the price for that amp (1,699 €, before it was 1,479 €) and I would need to buy a noise suppressor in addition (another 150 €), because it was rather noisy, even with medium gain settings. And like I stated, I am a bit on a budget, so that's a bit out of my range!
Plus, I did not like the JVM's second channel very much, so why pay for a channel I most likely will never use ?

I case I go for the VM, I would get the combo, because I heard that the Celestions they are using were especially voiced for that amp. I would then use an A/B box and use my Crate Powerblock for clean stuff until I can afford a Fender or something like that...

+1 for the looks :D
I had a Boogie Mark IV for a long time, so I know they make good stuff,
but I am afraid that the Lonestar Special is not covered by my budget :(

I hear Paul Gilbert's moved from Laney to the JVMs...

Paul played Vintage Modern on his last tour. My band has played as a support to him in Zagreb, so I've had the chance to check out his rig thoroughly.
I even took some photos of his rig, so here you go - Paul Gilbert's rig:

I thought US Ball dealers could only sell balls to US customers ???

I guess Kyle was referring more to "such related gear from North America" rather than the "fine guitars"...

BTW I don't think it would save me a lot of money to purchase i.e. a TSL 60 from Kyle and have it shipped to me halfway round the world, pay customs and import handling fee plus the VAT for Germany!

But thanks Kyle, I will take a peep at your website anyway :D

Plus it would be the wrong voltage!

FWIW, the Vintage "Modern" is more vintage than modern. IMO, it looks cooler than it sounds. It's a one trick pony that does that one trick really well but if you want something else, forget it. Clean? Ha!

The JVM is well worth the extra bucks and gear you need to run it. Buy one used, plenty of people selling them that don't know how to handle the amp. Yes, they squeal! Yes they're noisy. Anything with the midrange presence of a Marshall AND the amount of gain the thing has will squeal. The trick is to adjust the gain with your ears and not your eyes. OD1 and OD2 red only need the gain at about 2, not 2:00! Crunch Red is my favorite setting personally. Plus, the amp sounds amazing at low volumes. The Silent Recording option is also very nice.

The JVM DOES need a noise suppressor (Boss NS2 works well), and benefits enormously from a BBE Sonic Maximizer in the effects loop. After that it is a MEAN amp.

When I was working at the store we sold twelve JVM's for every one VM. People coming in to try the VM bought the JVM almost every time. I think they're trying really hard to push the VM with Slash and all that, but I had a really hard time getting a useful tone out of that amp.

With the Luke (my next EBMM), the single notes sang on the VM but chords sounded like poo. Correction - single notes in the middle of the guitar's range sang. Low notes got lost and high notes sounded like a can opener.

Just one git slinger's opinion.
