Just got back from California today and finally have a chance to write about Luke's performance at the Grammy Museum.
The Grammy Museum's Clive Davis Theatre is a very intimate venue and seats about 200. I saw Luke's son Trevor and daughter Tina in the row right in front of me. The show was about an hour and a half of interview with questions from the audience and about 40 minutes of music at the end.
Luke was recovering from a cold so they played a set of instrumental cuts. Both models of Luke III were there. He played the Olive gold SSH model the entire night with a single Bogner Ecstacy and his pedal board. The sound was fantastic and the band was very tight!
Thoughts on Luke III: I was hoping he'd switch up between the 2 Luke III's but he stuck with the SSH one. To my ears, the passive pickups have a much smoother EQ than the EMG's. The only way I can describe it: there isn't that mid-range grainy snarl when he's on the lead channel and really digs in. I really enjoyed the tone of that guitar and can't wait to find out what pickups are in there and when it's going to be available for sale. Might have to get both versions!
No matter what Luke plays through he'll always sound like himself and with the Luke III it was no exception. Overall, I'd say this model sounds very "Les Paulish" and full.
At the end, there was a quick meet and greet. No photos allowed during and after the gig, but I did get to shake the masters hand and say hello. He kindly signed two of my Luke guitar plates. There was also a guy that came to the gig with a Black sparkle Luke with no case and was hoping to get it signed. I'm sure he walked out very happy!
A pic of the two backplates and many nice memories!
