It was scanned with lasers from one of Lukes old guitars, l'm pretty sure it was his old Robot guitar, man l'd love to get my hands on that guitar.

Not that what you're saying isn't true. Honestly, I just don't know. I'm just commenting that I've neither heard, nor read that the Luke neck shape was copied from any other neck. I've just never come across that information. I don't really know much about the history of the Luke.

Of course, the story of the EVH neck was that it was copied. That's definitely documented in the press somewhere. Same thing with the Y2D neck.

That leads me to the following questions, to expand the discussion. Which signature EBMMs had their necks copied from another neck? What specific guitars were used?

For example, was JP's copied from his JPM P1, P2, P3, or P4? Was it even copied? Those guitars had binding on the necks IIRC. That's gotta affect the shape. Then again, JP is a guy who likes to shake things up every now and then. So, maybe he went with something different and didn't even bother with having an old neck digitized and reproduced.

Yes, the MM Luke neck was definitely modeled by scanning the neck from one of Luke's guitars.. probably a Valley Arts one but I'm not 100% certain about that. Anyway, I think Dudley scanned the neck as a starting point and then there were some further refinements.

I read somewhere that it was based on the feel of a favoured '62 Strat neck that Luke owns. I may be wrong!!

And i read somewhere that it was scanned from his "favourite Valley Arts neck"..I believe that "The Robot" has a V-shaped neck...perhaps?!.

Its just so utterly comfortable to play on. I played a friends Les Paul the other day and it felt SO fat as Im now used to my Luke, I thought the LP neck needed to lay off the junk food !!! Ha ha ha

Im that much into the feel/shape/size of the Luke neck Ive been in the process of getting a custom made Flying V over the last several months, purely for live work, and I have informed the engineer I want the neck to be as near as, to my Luke, only difference being it will be a 24 fret job not 22. Im actually taking the Luke guitar to his workshop tomorrow for more scans etc. Really looking forward to giving the V a good seeing to once its made as Ive got an EMG 85 bridge pickup and a Fernandes Sustainer pickup installed. Should get some rocktastic sounds out of that baby !

I believe the Luke neck was scanned from the Valley Arts "Robot"... Not sure where I read it, though (could be an internet roumor faik).
What I do know, is that the EBMM JP neck is very different to the old Ibanez JPM. The JPM neck was narrower (42mm) and had a slightly deeper back than the current EBMM JP... Actually, the old JPM felt more 60's Strat-like - if that makes any sense.

Cool. I've never been fortunate enough to play a JPM. The only ones I've seen in real life were at DT concerts.

Yeah, it's a real shame that Ibanez didn't continue making the JPM neck shape, as it is very different to their usual Wizards... and my warped '80's mind actually miss weird graphics, such as the picasso. Sadly Ibanez owns the right to the Picasso art - a picasso EBMM could have been a massively cool ltd edition Petrucci signature!

Cheers

Thanks, Glenn.

Rob you know man no problem.

I've tried a couple of Lukes and I like the feel of the neck personally. It's different from the Axis Sport, Al, JP and Silo Special.

Someday I hope to have a really cool Luke, when will that day come?
