Nope never thought about it. I have thought about putting a 60 there, but just for giggles. Love the 85, love my 81 just a bit more.

Anyone thought of trying an 18 Volt mod on a Luke? Emg's are supposedly made to handle 27 Volts. Not sure if it would work with the singles in there or even what it would sound like. They say an 18 volt mod on a humbucker sounds more open and less compressed.

Rob, I think you can give it a try as EMG85 and EMG H are similar in shape and connectors ths is a pretty straight forward and easy mod.

This is also a reversible mod and if it doesn't suit you then you can switch to a more advanced mod with the EMG89 where you keep both single and Humbucker.

It's fun to experiment with guitars, go for it :p

Sounds good for you Rob, but I love the stock 85 that's already there. I have no desire to switch anything out but I might be interested in trying out an 81. When did EMG start the quick connect system?

Dwells, what is your personal take on the 85 vs. the 81?

Its a single coil in a humbucker housing, I never use the humbucker in my Luke, and miss the bridge/middle tone. I would do this mod if it gave me that tone!!!

The only thing that turns me off about the Luke is the bridge humbucker. I'm intrigued about the H.

Rob please do it !!! You have to let us know how would sound a Luke with real 3 singles coil. Maybe only Trev Lukather can tell us cause he's got one.

KBaim can also mention it cause he's got a 89 installed on one of his Luke

I think you should give the EMG 89 a try.
On one hand you get the traditional Humbucker EMG 85 Lukather Sound and by Push/Pull Poti you're able to play Bridge/Middle Singlecoil Sounds á la Mark Knopfler.
IMHO that combination (SA/SA/89) gives you the most versatile sound options on a Luke (besides Piezo of course).

But the EMG 89 isn't the only splitable Humbucker. If your looking for a high gain Humbucker you should give the EMG 81TW a try. That's a splitable EMG 81.

You have to decide for yourself. Splitable Humbuckers give you simply more options.

this is not a splitable pup, but I thing EMG 89 is 2 pickups in one. one humbucker EMG 85 and one single coil (SA).

But I agree with Rob EMG H is an easy try no soldering. You swap the pickup and that's it ! as Rob is not using any bucker sound that is for the easiest thing to try.

The 89 and the 81TW have real single coils with their own preamp inside. The 81TW is bigger than a standard EMG humbucker and some body routing would be required, though. For ultimate versatility, then an 89 is the best choice. If you don't use humbuckers, then get an H or an HA, it will be a straight swap.

The 89 is indeed an interesting option. I saw in an advertisement that you get a splitable tone or volumecontrol with the pickup when you buy one.
I guess I am going to open up the new Luke Blue soon.....
The easiest thing about EMG is that you do not need any soldering.
Thanks for the info guys.

Actually 2 of my lukes. One with piezo, and one w/o piezo. I also rarely use the humbucker so I love being able to get 2 additional playing positions (along with blending Piezo in).

And yet retain the humbucker just in case I go back to writing and playing heavier riffs and songs one day. Especially if the day comes where i need to sell some guitars, I'd never part with the piezo/89. I've got prettier lukes but none that have the range of this one.

I take it that the 89 installation isn't just a plug & play mod ?

I assume just the standard switching, but installing a push-pull pot to split ?
