Luke pick up selection no 2

Can anybody tell me or help as to why pick selction 2 on the luke is totally useless, i would have thought that no 2 would split the humbucker to twin with the middle single coil to give a nice strat tone, but the bucker stay on so the middle coil tone is over powered and unuseable. This seems to be the only let down on a great guitar.

Well, I suppose that it's because Steve Lukather disagrees with you on the tonal utility of that particular combo... it is - after all - his guitar, and they build 'em the way he wants 'em, and ONLY the way he wants 'em... Anyway, I don't think you can split an EMG85...

Technically you can't... but an EMG 89 is basically an 85 that has coil splitting capabilities.

Yes, but the point is that it's Steve's guitar, and his fave bridge pup isn't the EMG89, it's the EMG85, so that's that...

A real shame that position #2 is no good, sorry I'll rephrase that, hard to find a use for. I'm on the verge of selling my Luke because of the EMGs. I've also got a hardtail Axis and an Axis Sport so I guess I'm a confirmed Axis freak. Still like playing the Luke though, a real good neck which I find preferable to the one on my Axis Sport. Any body else here wish that their Luke had different pickups?

I think the pick ups are great, but i wonder y luke didnt put the emg 89 on, which u can coil tap, maybe he loves the 85 so much he was willing to sacrifice it.
Middle pick up tone is awesome, almost sounds like an electric acoustic, but again it is not as loud as the nect pick up, so all comfigurations are at different volumes!!
I have any guitar u care to mention in my time and the guitar is the best i have had

Just my opinion, but for me, the luke is by far my favorite to play. And that's over all other EBMM's, my mid 70's Strat (w/EMG's cause of Luke), Les Paul studio, PRS custom 24.

All fine instruments. But my Luke seems to mold itself to whatever amp I play through, whatever style I fiddle with. And on top of that, it's the best feeling/easiest playing guitar I've ever owned or played.

That said, position 2 is the one I use least. Though I've found it works for high gain amp setting stuff. And Ok for clean if you roll volume down a tad. But I'm on the neck pup most for clean.

As long as the Luke has positions 5,4,3, and 1, I don't see how anyone could complain. If you need a different sound than pos 2 that's morestrat like, get a second guitar...but for god's sakes, keep the Luke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am going to keep it, I agree with you, it is the easiest playing guitar i have ever played, my playing just gets better when using this guitar.
Totally blown over by it accept that position 2, but hey, i am sure i will live!!

lindy fralin will make pickups that will go in yer lukes !!!! he just trims the plates to fit the emg routes. his pickups are wonderful. the luke is an awsome guitar.....i'd love to have a hardtail luke !!!!!
emg's are great pickups..but i find the amp e.q. has to be differt than me passive guitar amp settings. try lindy's single coils..w a morse bridge pickup. it will blow u away !!!!

Call me crazy, but I like the position 2 of the Lukes. It's cool on a
crunch channel, for singing leads with interesting overtones you can't get out of the EMG 85 alone.

I have lots of other axes if I need the "quack" though

BTW, the 89 is great if you need the splitable thing
