I've been useing EMG 85,SA,SA for years and years but not on a Luke which has slightly different voicing on the SA's but use bridge and middle position quite a lot on max overdrive. It gives a soft almost P 90 goldtop sort of sound with plenty of subtle plectrum attack and expression.A very Alan Murphy 80's solo type sound.
But as was previously mooted,it is subjective.

But back to this thread................Which guitar should you buy ??
I ve just bought a Luke which is being delivered tomorrow.

Hey Guys. I'm fairly certain its going to be the Luke... Now I'm just investigating dealers since no one around me seems to stock any Music Man. Anyone on here have great experiences with certain dealers or any dealers on the board? Shoot me a PM is discussing that is against the rules. I don't want to get banned or anything a week after I joined!

Not a problem discussing on the board. Prices aren't cool, though.

Pete DuBaldo ([email protected]) is the man. He's an active poster on the board and sold guitars to a good many of us

(His mom also makes a helluva lasagna.)

As Beej said prices are not cool and +1 on Pete and Nick DuBaldo, great guys, bought many from them, plus I think you will be pleasently suprised, damn now I want some Lasagna:D:p

And I have to disagree with others on the 2 position on the Luke, while I use 1 and 5 mostly I have a patch or two that makes the 2 position cool

I have an 81 there, but if I ever want to add a bit of "girth" to the sound on the fly, I flip it to position 2. Would be cool to get some quack there instead, then again, quack really isn't my thing.

Jason where do you live? People might be able to help you more if they knew that?

Oh and personally you can't go wrong with either guitar. I loved the Luke when I had it, but I much perfer a hardtail, so the Silo Special wins for me.

Hey... Good call. I'm on Rochester NY. I know of one dealer, but they don't stock anything. I'm willing to drive a bit to make sure its for me before ordering sight unseen.

Thanks,

Jason

Jason, go to see Pete Dubaldo in Manchester CT. They usually have an awesome stock of EBMM's. I see it's a 5 hour trip for you though man, sounds like a weekend after the new year trip man. :D

I'll add myself as another voice in the chorus singing praise to DuBaldo Music. I bought a Dargie Albert Lee and a Soldano Lucky 13 from Pete and he was great to deal with. I bought the Soldano right around the time they were hosting the Steve Morse clinic, so there were some understandable shipping delays. Pete made up for that by filling the amp cabinet with Wonder Wipes. (I bought a 2x12 combo...so I got a lot of Wonder Wipes!) He always answers my emails when I ask him for the price of this or that, even though I never buy anything

As for the Luke vs. Silo Special thing, I now own both. I've had my Luke for 6 years and my Silo Special for 1 week. I much prefer the comfort and playability of the Luke, the neck is absolutely perfect for my hands. That said, I like the sound of the Silo Special better. FWIW, my Luke is the only guitar I've ever owned with EMG's, so maybe I just don't know how to get a sound I like, or I don't have the right gear, but I've always wanted to replace the EMG's with something passive. I'm not new to the Silo either, I had one for awhile before I shipped it off to its proper owner. That's kind of why I always kept my eye out for one.

Good luck with your choice.

Hi guys,
I giged my brand new Luke twice in two days and just love it but then i am a EMG nut.The dealer pursuaded me to go for the one with the optional piezo p/up which was a good suggestion. The master stroke on max overdrive is to switch the piezo on and mix it slightly with the EMG's,it gives an almost Fender twin ,SRV top end with lots of high end compression especialy in position 3,4 and 5.

So thankyou as it realy is the dogs danglies.Oh and Merry Chrismas to you all from the UK.
