What type of wood do you prefer? is there a noticeable difference, say a luke3 with a mahagony body vs an alder body? I understand that mahogany is heavier, but could you tell the difference sound wise?

To my ears, an alder body sounds brighter than mahogany. My preference is for mahogany, which has a warmer tone. Some people will say it's not a discernible difference.

Also, I believe that the African mahogany EBMM uses is not heavy, like some other mahogany is.

I looked around and couldn't find it.

So what are the bodies of the three Lukes?

If you're askng about the Luke I, Luke II, and the LIII, they all come with alder bodies. The BFR Luke has a mahagony tone block and maple top with the alder body. There have been a couple of PDN offerings where you could get a mahagony body. Also, the GC special Bali burst LIII has a mahagony body with a maple top. I think that's all the mahagony body options for a Luke model.

I suggest to try the old "knock on wood" test on both the body and neck. This tends to give the easiest clue to the intrinsic woody undertones. If you walk around the music store gently knocking on guitars, and maybe smelling a few as well, it'll also make you appear really sophisticated.

I like that, reminds of the 'kicking the tires' on used cars, testing if the car falls apart or not.
