Definition for Lunch Pail bassist please.

Hmmm, I might have coined the phrase although I've heard it used to describe other types of work.....to me, it is someone like me.

1. Unable and/or uninterested in ever being labeled a "Slap Monster".
2. Probably self taught.
3. Never going to buy a Fodera, Ritter or other possibly spalted boutique bass.
4. Likes doing same thing over and over.
5. Unimpressed with self.
6. Willing to play the cheap, ugly gig.
7. Doesn't find root-five demeaning or simplistic.

I've made this a new thread because I thought it was an interesting question.

Anyone else? Chime right in and of course, as always, you're free to make fun of me.

I'm a "check-book bassist"
Way too much gear for my level of talent
Ok, I'm competent but should be way better
at 25+ bass years old.
(I say the same about my golf game)

All me except #3... had 2 custom made 6 string basses (and they were nice)... but then I was reformed by the advent of Bongodom (and sold said basses to help with my nasty Bongo habit).

1) Uninterested, but I have gotten calls specifically for my slapping ability. I'm not sure whether that's a statement on the caller's hearing or my ability though.
2) Tons of lessons over the years. Not sure they helped, but taken nonetheless.
3) I've owned a few high enders, but my "permanent" stable is all lunchpail.
4) Hate doing same thing over and over.
5) Completely unimpressed with self.
6) More than willing!
7) I'll root-5 with the best of 'em!

:D

1. Unable and/or uninterested in ever being labeled a "Slap Monster".

- i can slap but only use the technique when messing around. being a punk bassit i have no practical use for slapping. its nice to be able to do it to offset the whole "you use a pick - you're lame" stuff

2. Probably self taught.

- correct

3. Never going to buy a Fodera, Ritter or other possibly spalted boutique bass.

- nope, never

4. Likes doing same thing over and over.

- dunno about that

5. Unimpressed with self.

- i kik ass! what are you talking about?

6. Willing to play the cheap, ugly gig.

"got a garage or an amp [i'll] play any time

7. Doesn't find root-five demeaning or simplistic.

- see #2 ... i have no idea what that "really" means, but i can guess

I always thought of myself as a "blue collar musician"

I guess that many of the same points apply. I do show up on time and prepared for the gig. I serve the song. I can play half notes. My gear is reliable and maintained. I have some "nicotine queens" and I also have some nice newer looking basses. Over the years I have played with some really good musicians.... they have taught me a lot. I am good at what I do but I check my ego at the door. I usually play mid sized rooms in town and usually know the staff and most of the regulars by their first names. I talk to people between sets.

as the song says " I ain't no big star...but I'll play the blues for you"

I guess that would be a lunchpail bassist

In a van, down by the river...
Interestingly enough, I myself have been described as cheap, ugly, unimpressive and simplistic, and I have been told that playing with me is demeaning.

Seriously, though, it's like you've peaked inside my wretched little life! GET OUT OF MY HEAD!!!

As for the I-V, it's mastery holds the key to total consciousness~~~~

BTW, my Uncle died of the spalt, so be careful!

The only thing I slap is the monkey

2. Probably self taught.

Yep, from age 13

3. Never going to buy a Fodera, Ritter or other possibly spalted boutique bass.

In my case, also nothing with more than 4 strings :p

4. Likes doing same thing over and over.

Check

5. Unimpressed with self.

I know I'm solid and can lay down a great groove, but am no virtuoso

6. Willing to play the cheap, ugly gig.

eg. Will play biker parties for beer

7. Doesn't find root-five demeaning or simplistic.

I can also jam out a 30 minute long 12 bar blues

All this animosity towards slapping, and SRs are so good at it :) Seriously, I believe that the reason you all are averse to slapping is because of Flea and people like him. To be more specific I believe that what WE really dislike is "popping." Its popping that breaks up the groove, not slapping. I don't like flea either, but I think Marcus Miller slaps the pajamas off of the bass, and he never sounds busy when he's laying down a groove; he hardly ever pops and only for accents. Frankly I love slap bass and I'm quite good at it -- been doing it since the mid 80s (not because of Flea). I can do a pretty good impression of Marcus, Wooton, Stanley Clark, Mark King, and yes even Flea. Actually Flea is the easist to do because he really has no groove -- he's all fast repetition. Now, I can lay down a 12 bar with the best of them, but why not be versatile. I can cover any gig I would get called for, from straight ahead jazz, to metal. When I was younger I practiced hard -- hours and hours a day for years and years, and missed out on a lot of teenage hijinx as a result. I also became a very good player :) I guess I am a swiss army knife bass player. Its cool that EB basses cover all of our playing needs, though!

I think I'd simply sum it up as "more interested in playing than gear". Within reason, any chance to play is a good one.

And I'd like to add that my 2 band 'Ray is a slap machine. It's one of the many reasons I bought it...

No animosity here - I'm jealous. I just don't have the motivation to do it, nor do I really have the chops.

I can do a pretty good Jerry Scheff imitation, though.

'Round here, you're only called to play slap bass when someone wants to hear the Seinfeld theme. :p

I do slap, but I'm not good at it. I like bass solos, but I'm not good at those either. Slowly, it's become more apparent that my niche is just sitting back and letting everyone do their thing.
