Guys you didnt ruffle feathers but I think that some of you needed an adjustment. I dont like VS when talking about guitars or artists...I love what each guy does...I have my favorite players but in no way do I make it a competition.

Asking a player who has changed the genre to continue to grow is pressure and unrealisitc...I think that EVH crumbled under that pressure. When he came out he played free and with no burdens...Look what it did to clapton when he was sailing along and saw "Clapton is God" alcholism and herion soon followed.

Picasso and Monet painted with their style. Critics didnt expect Picasso to be anyone other than Picasso.

I think that's my problem with them in many ways. Vai was at his very best when he was with DLR and Joe on Flying In A Blue Dream and The Extremist (though I'm the only person I know that loved Engines Of Creation) IMHO. Same with EVH. As he's tried to grow, his style has gotten lost. Maybe it's unrealistic to expect them to stay in the same place, and maybe if they had, they wouldn't have been nearly as good or fondly remembered, but it seems that the innovators keep trying to innovate, rather than just being happy with where they are.

I think that's why I now repect the likes of Luke, Landau, Petrucci etc more now that I'm older. THey don't try and push boundaries, they just play like themselves. Sure, they change as time and fashion changes, but they retain their feel throughout. Something that the others do seem to have lost lately. I don't doubt Mr. Vai is a wonderful person and player, but I played the last CD once and that was enough, and as along term fan, I found that disappointing. Same with Super Colossal. Or maybe its me that's changed, and not them? My head now hurts....

Anyway, enough nonsensical wittering.

Back to prom dresses. Anyone got any pics? ;)

vai owns g3 with satch dont hold your breath.

Satch actually started it (Senior Partner)...probably 49% of the royalties...

I expect Vai comes a close second...

According to Satch's website anyway!

What I really meant to say was I'd love to see Petrucci, Gilbert, Nuno, Lukather, Timmons, Vai and Satch do a concert together.......G6.....maybe!

Diversity in any profession is what makes things interesting and indeed what makes us interesting as humans.

Like you say BP...if we were all the same we may as well be robots and thats why Cloning is a no no in my book...very apocalyptic!

Agree with Ali RE: EVH...very few expected him to grow and innovate. I don't expect or need any of my favorite bands/guitarists to continuously change. In fact I dislike it when bands change to fit current MTV trends. But I think most expect artists to at least attempt a few new releases in 10 year period (not just 5 new songs...two of which produced as the background music for adult entertainment!)

Music runs in cycles anyway. If you stick to your roots it'll come back round again in about 20 years. Look at what happened to instrumental music about 10 years ago. It didn't go away because those doing it kept at it, but it wasn't as popular. Now its back again!

I think it's time for the EBMM Artist's Guitar Series.

Steve Morse, John Petrucci, Luke and Vinnie Moore all on tour together. :D

You can slap me for typing that in Dallas, Pop. :D

Saw that show.... it was called the Open House :D
Now we just need Albert to join the fray :)

Jumping in here...

Seems like musical tastes just evolve a bit over time, both for listener and artist.

When I was in HS, my favorite bands (as well as the guys who inspired me the most) were, Queen, Rush, Yes, and Led Zep...but now I hardly ever listen to any of them.

Now my tastes have changed and it's an entirely different crop of players.

And for the record, I saw Vai give a clinic a few years ago in LA for the NATIONAL GUITAR WORKSHOP program. Very little playing by him. It was mostly Q&A...it was only an hour and a half and it could've gone on for another 2 hours.

Stop the Madness! You guys sound like high school chicks criticizing prom dresses. Vai is brilliant and if you are tired of his approach so be it. Satch is a wonderful player and ditto. JP is a worldbeater and Luke is a genius.

Luke was very concerned playing with the boys. The boys respect the living daylights out of Luke. It is consumate professionals showing total respect and not an ounce of pettiness.

Since l kinda started this madness, when l posted my comment about what Luke said that he was concerned about playing on the same stage, what l meant was l've heard Luke say this a couple of times, and l wish he wouldn't put himself down, cause he such a fantastic player, and versitle player, just look at his session list, doing all those styles of music. And to be honest, l'm not a fan of Vai Satch and Yngwie, they put me to sleep, l'd rather hear Luke play one note than hear Vai do a million notes. But that doesn't mean they are not great players, just not my cup of tea, and that doesn't mean that they are not great guys/humans/etc etc.

Peace,

Scott.

i think Super Colossal is great! Sound snothing like Satch's other albums, much more song based playing with better melodies, and great tone. hardly any whammy bar stuff or tapping.

I much prefered the direction he went off on with Engines of Creation, but I think the fan reaction was less stellar. It really suited his style. I just find Crystal Planet, Is there Love In Space? and Super Collosal all a bit samey. Strange Beautiful music was softer and better for it, especially his version of Sleepwalking which was sublime. Thing is, Joe can REALLY play his heart out, as can Steve. I just wish they would, rather than all the stunt playing that often comes out in G3, and which most people have as a public perception of them. Joe's greatest solo for me was the one on Rubina's Blue Sky Happiness. It's just perfect and utterly gorgeous. And it contains very few notes...

Then again, my favourite Vai moments of all time are the long solos on Ease (P.I.L) and Rescue Me Or Bury Me on Sex and Religion which contain plenty of notes. What made those special was that they sounded (and I believe were) completely spontaneous. He just let himself go. He should do that more often. More Alien Love Secrets, less Real Illusions please

As for Yngwie. I admire his sheer ability, but I just don't "get" him. I only own Odyssey and that album was really made for me by Joe Lynn Turner's superb vocals. At that point in time, Yngwie hit the spot both in songwriting and in playing. Since then, well, I listened to the solo spot in the second G3 DVD and I honestly, truthfully couldn't tell one song from another!

Music isnt a competition. All listed are incredible musicians, you may dig certain players' music more than others, but they are ALL extremely talented.

What a show. Whish I was there.
