Wow those are bold moves. I liked your LP tone and especially your Axis tone when I saw you play a while back. I like that honest sound.

I really like the look, though it is a shame the single coil doesn't match. If EVER you decide to put the pickups back in the LP, would you perhaps think of recording some clean samples of the pickups in the Y2D and then in the LP? I'd love to hear how different the tone is due to the different construction.

Nice job, and that top, truly, does suck. What an amazing finish!

I can't remember the specifics but I don't think Gary Moore's neck pickup was just reversed. Wasn't it wired differently?
Looks really cool without the pickguard.

to me the Y2D without the pg looks naked - not my cup of tea.
but it´s your guitar and if you like it this way - it´s o.k.

+1 a bit naked was what I thought before I read Joe´s post
The Humbuckers look good, the single is a bit strange but to be honest a chrome singlecoil as on JB´s Y2D looks a bit srtange too.
Mybe a little demo for us? :)

UPDATE:

Back in December, on a whim I ordered a purple set of Dimarzio SuperD and PAF Pro. My instinct told me that was probably the sound I was hearing in my head - a little more modern than my LPs, but still leaning towards a classic rock vibe. I put the set in, did one gig, then my pickup OCD took over and I started down the road that lead to this post. I really need a Betty Ford Pickup Swapping clinic.

So here's where I ended up, back where I started, the Purple Monster!

Not that the 36ths didn't sound good, I just like these better, particularly the bridge, the 36th is a little more thin on this guitar than in a LP. The SuperD loves this guitar.

I did some recording on the gig. I stuffed my 7-piece band into the corner of a local bar for New Year's Eve, and recorded with a handheld Tascam GT-R1 recorder here's some cuts:

Can it do jazzy blues? Why, I think so (I solo after the horns):

Stormy Monday Swing - YouTube

And here's our anthem Soul Man:

Soul Man, NYE 2011 - YouTube

My rig is guitar -> Tech 21 Blonde -> Fender Jazzmaster Ultralight (a solid state amp). I wasn't mic'd, what you're hearing is ambient from a little 1x12" sealed cab.

Incidentally, my 17 y/o daughter, Miss Nick on the bass side, is playing her Big Al on these cuts.

I wasn't sure what shade the purple was when I ordered them. I have a cream SuperD and am considering getting a cream PAF neck to match. Or getting both in black. But the family loves the purple. Besides, purple is the color of the law...

So I think I'll leave it this way. At least until I change it again.

Here's a few more pics of the neck:

That looks better to me. There is still something about this guitar though that needs to have the pickguard in my mind even if it is clear. I think it is also the look of the single coil right next to the humbucker. But I like this better than the chrome covers. I think cream would also look really nice though. Steve himself had a proto I believe with creme pups and it looked cool.

All your guitar needs now is a pimp hat. :)

I've backed Fillmore Slim (look him up) he would definitely approve.

I wonder how a smoked black transluscent guard would look.

Thanks guys. A little of topic, as I mentioned above, the bass player in those cuts is my 17 y/o daughter, but the keyboard player is an 18 y/o young man. They both recently auditioned for USC's music program and are anxiously awaiting results.

Back on topic, the 18 y/o piano player also has an Elton John tribute act - I'll be playing Purple with him tonight!
