Guys, take off the neck and sand it down. Seriously. I've sanded necks on an Ibanez, Yamaha and my Taylor acoustic. Start with a coarser grit and finish with a super fine paper. You'll love the difference.

I have to disagree about it not making a huge difference. I think finish makes a huge difference. If you guys aren't willing to sand off the lacquer, I totally understand because you paid oodles for a killer guitar and are iffy about changing anything. If the lacquer isn't something you can live with, just sell it and find a model that suits your needs better.

Well said. :D

I could be wrong but I don't believe that anyone from EBMM has ever said that mahogany necks must be finished and that this is the reason for the BFR having a painted neck..

Scott referenced it in one of the original BFR threads when they were introduced and the question came up at that time.

Mahogany necks are softer and much more porous than maple necks, so that is the reason mahogany necks are typically finished.

I wouldn't mind changing something like that.

I don't really care, as I don't mind painted necks that much.. but this thread is just to ease my curious mind.. and the curiosity of others. Maybe somebody official can give a solid answer?

I would like for somebody to elaborate though..

Say for instance.. a satin finish(which Pablo is correct in saying that it is a lacquer), could that be used on the BFR Petrucci neck if somebody didn't like it and still provide protection? If I remember correctly from the guitars I've played with satin finishes.. they were pretty smooth.. at least smooth enough to please the painted neck-haters. :D

I do wonder what the JP BFR would have been like if the neck weren't mahogany. I would love to hear/play a version of that guitar with an original JP neck.
It would sound pretty much like the Silo 20th - IMHO the best sounding guitar Big Poppa's crew ever built...

Does anyone know whether a standard JP neck would fit in the BFR?

Cheers

I smell an experiment coming on..

Anybody willing to do the swap, post pictures, sound clips and maybe a video?
