Maintenance Question

I have a question about my tuning pegs and tuning hardware. There seems to be a light film of gook on the pegs and tuners. I can't get it off by just rubbing it with a cloth. Does anyone have a clue on how I can get it off? It doesn't seem like rust; I don't know what it is.

Try some chrome cleaner.

There's also a product called an 'E' cloth - it's marvellous. Not to be used with anything except water though....
