Making the drummer smile

As I mentioned in another post - we added a new drummer to our band recently. A former touring pro - an excellent musician.

I was playing my DD Bongo 4HS last night at rehearsal, which btw, sounded much better in the band setting than by itself in my basement. Had it turned mostly toward the bridge pickup. It really ripped it up.

Then I switched to my SR5HS to play the DMB song "Stay". During the chorus part that noodles aroung on low Eb, F and C (on the B string) the drummer, upon hearing the wonderful tones coming out of my rig, almost stopped playing and said "good lord, that bass sounds awesome". He smiled broadly and continued to lay down a killer beat.

Never have I had such positive reactions to my basses. Thanks EBMM!!!

Drummers never said anything about my basses until I started playing Music Man basses.

I suppose there's the outside possibility that drummers, as a species, are evolving?

<--------------My first Stingray had the same effect on the drummer in my old band. The next year when I had my Bongo 5HH we were doing a big show on one of those make-shift scaffolding stages and for grins on the last note of a high energy tune I opened up the bass knob full on the sustained ending note. Not only did it get the drummer's attention but it literally shook the stage so hard one of the lights fell of the back truss behind my bass rig. Talk about a show stopper!!!!

The Bongo's should come with caution stickers

"bass knob - only use in case of emergency"

or better yet.......

"Caution - extreme use of bass knob may result in stage damage"

The response to my MusicMan basses from many bandmates has always been positive. Seems that they love them almost as much as I do.

My SR5 has more low end than any other bass I've played. I auditioned for a gypsy jazz band a while back, and when the drummer heard a low C#, he looked at the bass amp like he'd seen a ghost. He said it sounded like thunder

Had something similar happen this past Sunday. I was playing my SR5 at my church band's practice Sunday afternoon. We use an Aviom system. The worship leader stopped mid-phrase and said "I can't believe how good that bass sounds in the mix".

I love my SR5.

The response to my MusicMan basses from many bandmates has always been positive. Seems that they love them almost as much as I do.

Formerly I have played many basses. Fender, Jackson, Warwick, Spector, and nobody has ever made any comments about my sound. I show up at practice with a brand new Sterling and WOW!! Not only did I notice a hugh difference, but the rest of the band had made multiple comments as to how great my sound now was. Now if I can only talk them into letting me do a bass solo!

I had a similar experience with my drummer. Totally dug the Bongo.

Also, one of my guitarists was sitting out a song during rehearsal (chilling on the couch with a martini) and suddenly popped up, ran over to me, and shouted in my face, "That bass sounds f#$%ing awesome --- you can actually hear the notes! Play me a note, any note." I played a single sustained note and he reiterated, "Man, that sounds great!"

On top of that, my other guitarist is a total Fender diehard constantly harrassing me to get a P or J bass (kind of a joke, he likes Musicman too). But the real turning point came when I got my 30th Anniversary Stingray and let him play it ---- "Don't let go of that bass man, that's something special." I think he felt a little bit of Fender-betrayal hitting him because he followed with "It's a little like a P-bass" to which I replied, "It's nothing like a P-bass, it's its own legend."

Now now guys, lets not pick on the drummer.... I'm a drummer who plays bass. Don't you guys know that the bassist is supposed to be the one guy in the band to defend the drummer!?!

Not so sure...a bassist is in the musician catagory. A drummer is a guy that hangs out with musicians.

.... I've only been playing the bass a short time, and there was no mention of that in Beaver Felton's video's.
