Yesterday while browsing YT I came across someone playing the Kindred Spirits solo. It reminded me of how much I loved it and how JPs playing in LTE inspired me to get better at guitar years ago.

Funny thing is, I've been learning a whole bunch of new solos and DT riffs and never took the time to learn some of my fave oldies (this one included). So I took an hour to learn it and put it up on my own YT channel.

Instead of just putting up the video like I usually do I decided to document my little session. I took pics of mic placement and amp settings. Nothing super new really but might interest some of you.

Don't mind a few flubs in the playing. I'm still a bit insecure and it was a single take (except for 1 dubbed note) for video purposes.

Mic placement:

- Slightly angled towards the center of the speaker
- It actually seems to be pointing to the edge of the dust cap
- About 1" away from the grille, maybe a hair less.

I should mention this mic placement isn't what I normally use. In fact, I hardly ever use the same placement twice.

What I do is set the amp to sound the way I like in the room first... Then I put a closed headphones and start listening to my tone through it while messing with the mic. It can get kinda tricky since my hands are busy playing... I'm getting quite good at moving the mic with my feet

Once it sounds good through the headphones I'll play along to whatever backing/song I have and make additional tweaks from there. I usually don't get too crazy with placements. Not for these silly covers anyway. When I get into the studio to record my own albums I'll put in some more time/care.

Kindred Spirits is a fave track of mine too.

That is some great playing there, and great tone.

More Mark IV goodness. :)

This is an original we're working on. The instrumental section to be more specific... There's a thread at the bass forum for it but I didn't wanna start another one here in the guitar side.

+eleventy billion!!! Nice work! Great playing and the riffs are fantastic!

Only thing I would say is it sounds very similar to this other band I know...

No worries! :)

VRA! isn't really a band.
It's just us 3 fooling around.

We have 'Ordem Inversa' and 'Bad Salad' together.

Thanks!

cool! i loved the cover, it sounded great! just like about all your covers! i love how your lower notes (on the 7th string) sound really clear and not muddy(i HAVE to get myself a mark series amplifiers!)
And this original demo was really cool too!:)

I wonder how much of that clearness of the lower B is due to the original JP pickups and not the amp.

Haven't played a JP7 with D-Sonics or the newer JP ones to compare.
