I am thinking about picking up one of the new Marshall Haze MH40C combo amps and wondered if any one try one yet? if so how are the cleans and the drive channels? Just seems like a good price for a 40w all tube amp.

Yup, me and my son tried one of them at the LIMS (London International Music Show) last June 13th. We tried the 40 watt one and is da bomb! Very similar in sound to the old Blues Breaker, we loved it. Go and try one, I recommend it.

As for your question regarding clean or drive channel, as I said the clean is really ballsy bluesy with just the right crunch clip whereas the dirt channel is typical marshall power, no surprise there, any humbucker fitted guitar will sing through that baby.

I love Jim Marshall dearly, and I have used marshall products for almost 20 years, but....

With Jim's health in decline, I personally don't like the way the company has gone, it's traded it's principles for profit, and whilst in this climate you gotta do what you gotta do to survive, it's (IMHO) not cuttin' it right now. Victoria is a strong business woman, and I just don't love the amps as much now I know Jim isn't wandering up and down the factory.

The haze looked like it would have been nice, but with the FX it cheapens the idea, let line6 do their thing and Marshall stick to theirs,

Sorry if this is a rant, just had to get it out there!

I totally agree, if you want something thats going to many things average you buy a Line 6, if you want something thats going to do one thing really well you buy a Marshall/Vox/Musicman/Fender/Blackstar etc...

Don't forget that Marshall started using the programable digital reverb with the JVM series - the start of the "slippery slope" so to speak:p.

Fender's got something called a "Vintage Modern Deluxe" or VM Deluxe that is a channel switching amp with digital effects in a Deluxe Reverb sized package - pretty much the same thing as the Marshal Haze 40 but with 6l6 tubes (and probably made in Mexico given the price).

Im with you smelly, Marshall seem to have gone for the market that people want ie small valve amps but missed the boat by making it in india, for the price id get a Blackstar or similar, it amazes me though that a company like Hayden can make a hand wired amp in this country for around the £500 mark and yet someone with the buying power of Marshall cant? Laney can make one too, hmm sounds like Victoria and Paul are trying to ruin daddys empire! I agree epecially on the FX things, it makes it sound more like a practice mp to me then.
sounds like putting the £ before the people who made you the £ in the first place.
Interestingly have you noticed that the Blackstar people are ex Marshall and Wharfdale have come out with an amp designed by an ex Marshall employee, do you think they are jumping ship before it goes down completely?

oh and in case anyone wonders i love Marshalls , always have.

I'm a huge fan of Marshall and have used them for 35 years.

i've also been lucky enough to visit the factory and experienced their excellent customer service.

Let's not lose sight of the fact that they still make Marshalls in the UK and what with product diversification have had some lower priced models made in India, They still make top range amps and cater to those not able to shell out a bundle. They also did a lot of work to resurrect Vox.

I don't know why some ex employees have jumped ship - there again how long did they work for Marshall?

I'm like BP - I don't like an iconic British manufacturer being discredited. We should be proud of what Jim has done and is still trying to do - compete in a very competitive market. If I offered my Silver Jubilee up for grabs - I'd have to take my phone off the hook.

Sorry Smelly not a rant at you - just sticking up for Jim who is a very generous man behind the scenes.

You are right Spud , I am all for sticking up for Jim too, I like my guitars american and my amps made here. Marshalls make up probably 85% of the classic guitar tones so yes we should be proud of Jim and co's achievements. The Stack is a Marshall icon and an icon for our finger fumblings,. They are iconic, every one who grew up here and watched top of the pops (in my case in the 80's) will remember a stack or two on stage with every group (or so it seemed) Incidentally i and someone else were criticised here for wanting to buy Marshall cause it is made here a while back and was being told i should buy a blackstar (which admittedly i am thinking of) because of it being uneconomical to produce anything here now.

 gotta say those Blackstar amps are good aren't they?

Still wish I had my 70's Marshall 50 and 4 x 12!!!

Just remember this:

If it's ok for Sterling by MusicMan to be built in the far east and assembled in USA then it's ok also for Marshall to do the same, these day and age thanks to computer operated cad softwares, factories make good products regardless of their location.

You shouldn't diss the product until you try it, when we tried it, we found the Haze to be more than just ok.

In regard to all the negative posts here about the Marshall Haze, reply if you actually played one.

...waits to hear pin drop.

They have to compete. Egnater Rebel - made in China. Quality amp/Cool features - uber versatile. They HAVE to respond. Have to.

Spud, I'm with you 100% - What jim did is iconic, and he's an amazing man - and having met him now 3 times his drive and passion to please punters is unquestionable - but I do feel he's just 'wheeled out' by the new administration - I don't like what she's doing to the company- (Nothing to do with me just sayin!)

Grand Wazoo - I agree that the Sterling/MM thing is on a similar thread, but it' Sterling By Musicman - where Marshall are just moving it, BP has setup a different company, and introduced a new level, Marshall did it in the 90's when they dug up Park (not Pat Park but see the irony!)

I love Marshall, but the newer stuff is a mistake in my humble opinion.

Bring back the Silver Jubilee.

I've had quite a few chats with Jim's PA - Ellie and his daughter.

Jim has to have carers in attendance because of his stroke - but they can't keep him away from the shows meeting the public - it's what keeps him going.

My trip to Marshall was unforgettable - not only did Jim keep to his appointment - he also had the bloody board of directors there as well.

Seeing people queue to see him and the smile it brings to his face is priceless.

Not many people know that Jim was in a full body cast until his early teens, is a self taught engineer and even a stroke and pneumonia won't stop him.

..... and Marshall still makes good kit period

I tend to agree with you on the subject of Marshall and the way it seems to be run these days. I always wanted a Marshall stack when I was starting out, and had dozens of Marshall's over the years. However it must be said everything I have tried as of late is not voiced to my ear, and from what I understand is not as reliable as it once was. Plus there seems to be far too much emphasis on low end stuff which has cheapened the brand.

My old JCM900 I sold to a friend is still chugging with no maintenance and lots of abuse! I doubt the newer stuff will have the longevity.

Its a real shame that Marshall don't have the kudos that they once had. They are a British success story and an iconic brand of the music world. Just look at the EBMM roster of guitar endorsers - do any of them use a Marshall? Probably not.
