Maybe stupid question about the mute-pads

Hey!

Someone offered me a 3-Band-EQ Stingray for a good price, but now I have a maybe stupid question about the mute-pads. He sent me some pics and there are screws in the bridge instead of the mute-pads. I asked him about that and he told me that he is the original first owner had bought the Ray like that in 1996. Is the bridge like that original or did someone remove the pads? I can´t imagine that the Ray came like this out of the factory.

Edit: Just keeping this for the record, but beware, the following assumption is rubbish! These screws (and the plastic washers) look more like something originally used for motorcycle fairings. Seems to me, that the whole muting assembly has been replaced with these screws. End of rubbish ... see following post by "the unrepentant!

If you want this bass, and if you want it in it's original shape, it seems to be a good idea to call the distributor or EBMM customer service (eMail will do) to check on the availability of these parts.

actually if it was '96 i think it's more likely that this was one of the transitional period rays that had that bridge but didn't come with the foam mutes.

EDIT: yep, that's exactly what it is, never came with mutes. Check here, it's the circa '93-'96 "trans" bridge right before they started using the bridges they use today.

As a post script to this, EBMM used to market a mute pad kit to convert basses with this bridge to mute pad assembly - long since out of production but the question of re-manufacture of these has been asked here several times recently. Lots of old StingRays have lost their mute pads over the years and people are interested in buying the kit to re-fit them.

ah yeah, now EBMM are making the vintage line of stingrays with mute pads, it may be worth finding out if you can get a set, or even finding an owner of one of the new vintage rays that doesn't mind selling you their mutes, unlikely but worth a shot.

No, you have to have the old style large bridge to screw the mutes onto.

It's too bad that EB hasn't made these available. I also have a '95 with a transition bridge which is missing the mute plate and thumbscrews. I would love to have the mutes functional on my bass.
