The JP is an evident choice. But the SUB is also a great metal axe. Besides, even the pickguard is metal !

pretty simple
Actually I don't think it's that simple.

I'm a firm believer that you can pretty much play any style with any guitar. But dual humbuckers tend to suit high gain better, so with that in mind you have-

Axis, JP, Morse, Silhouette and of course the Sub.

But of course you can just swap the p'ups in some of the other models to suit. Lots of hard rocking guys playing Silhouette Specials, for example.

So I don't think there's a "best" model. Pick your feature set (pickup styles, trem, piezo, 6 string vs 7, etc.) and whittle down the list. Then find a neck style you like (the JP is pretty different than the Luke) and you're pretty much there.

I like playing Hard Rock out of the Silhouette Special. However, I think if you want to play some really heavy Death Metal stuff, you would need a different pickup.

JP or Axis. Axis has the highest output humbuckers in the MM lineup, from what I remember... but JP's are cooler  :D :p

They will all do it... Think about it, the Sub, Silos, JP, Luke, Axis (all versions), and even the AL (MM90's or pickup swap) are very capable. Through my Vox I actually am cranking out a wall of metal sound... with the PAF loaded Silo. All of these guitars are good for just about anything you can throw at them, IMO.

I've been playing thrash/death metal and more on my Silo for years. I've almost always had EMG's in it but I'm putting an Evo set in it pretty soon. I agree with Beej though, I think you can play metal on about anything but a hollow-body. MusicMans are all fine guitars for metal or anything else.

i play in a cover/original band and we play everything from AC/DC to Slipknot and my Luke pulls it off no problem. Also, based on being a huge fan, Petrucci's EB's are great heavy sounding guitars.

I think the player has a lot to do with the overall sound. Put any of the models previously mentioned into the hands of a great metal player and it'll work.

I went from playing an Axis as my no.1 to JPs and one thing I found was the JP had better definition for metal 'chugging' (pre-D-Sonic). IMO of course. :D
