Mike Hererra's (MxPx) custom Stingrays

Mike Herrera is one of the main reasons I even picked up a bass and a Stingray 4. I got the chance to meet him and the rest of MxPx when they played a local record store in So. Cal 5 or 6 years back, a really nice guy.

Actually now that I think about it, I was barely a freshmen in high school so it was probably around 7 or 8 years ago...Wow where does the time go? I still even have Mike and Toms picks from the show they played that I had got them to sign and for some reason the list of songs they were playing that day that I swiped.

on a side note. cental, what dvd are you talking about? and where did you get it? mxpx is a great band and mike was probably the first guy to get me hooked on a stingray. the more info the better.

Does Mike still use Ampegs? Anyone know how he gets thats gritty growly Fenderish tone? Mark Hoppus had a similar StingRay tone on Enema of the State.

Yeah he still uses Ampeg. I never really thought of his tone as Fenderish. On some of the earlier cds, he didnt use a Stingray. I think he used a Peavey T-40, but I'm not sure.

he has been using stingrays since like 94....he used to play a 70's ray that was rootbeer colored....he retired it and went to the sparkle ones.....

you said some of mikes basses were wired strait to the jack. i was curious if the battery was still wired in the bass, or was that disconnected along with the pre- amp and it was literally the pickup wired strait to the output jack. if the battery was still connected could you tell me how. id like to do something like that with my bass. thanks.

No preamp/no battery/no volume control/no tone control IMHO, don't do it.

I've read about bassist doing things like this- they use their amps (or something else) for all the tone control. Timothy B.Schmit has a signature bass (built by..... "some other company") that is essentially a (passive) Jazz bass with nothing but a volume knob.

I think this is crazy, but it works for other people. I would die without being able to tweak my tone on the fly.... but that's just me.
