Well, I decided to take the plunge and give my neck the ol' Birchwood and Casey treatment today. My band has a show tonight, and I was going to wait until after the show to do it. But after playing the guitar at practice lastnight, I knew it could not wait. The neck just did not have that nice sleek feel anymore. So, I decided to take a risk, and do it before the show. It was so easy! I was reading through some back posts, and someone had mentioned seeing how they did it at the factory. Using that as my model, I decided not to sand. I applied the oil, let it sit for about 15 seconds, and then wiped. Once I felt the oil was rubbed in really good, I then applied the wax. After about 25 seconds, I began to wipe down the back of the neck. WOW! Man does that neck feel good now.

I am not starting this thread because I am under the assumption that I had just solved world peace. I just wanted to give everyone a big thank you who so generously offered up their helpful tips, and let them know it went off without a hitch. I thank you, and my guitar thanks you! :)

how would you describe the feel of the neck when you thought it needed the wax and oil?

In my experience, on oil-finished necks, a quick wipe with some ultra-fine steel wool usually cleans a lot of the gunk off the neck which restores that silky-smooth feel. Then apply just a light coat of oil to re-seal it.

You should be able to find it relatively easy. Actually, I picked my tru-oil and wax up at my local Wal-Mart.

Unpleasent. :)

No, I could just tell. There were areas that were still really smooth and then there were little pockets where you could tell that it was worn. It's hard to really put into words. I just knew.

Hey- congrats! It's always a bit scary doing it the first time, but MAN what a feeling when you're done! :D
