not sure, maybe because you're trying to lower the volume of the bridge pickup, not the middle.

Indeed that is the point the signal still flows from a point of origin position 1 (bridge humbucker), the pickup via the Cap and resistor or the resistor and cap to position 2 which was the question regarding the order of those rather than why which was known.

When the selector is in position 1 you get full bridge humbucker and in position 2 Bridge and middle, the signal passes via cap and resistor to reduce the humbuckers output to balance and "quack" better with the middle.

No, the order doesn't matter when they're in series.

This is how I did it on my last Luke. Sounded nice & quacky in the bridge + middle position.

Sorry to necro bump this but just did this mod and it works great! On a strange note I found out the switch route was filled in a little too much with shield paint and the middle pickup has been always on with the bridge. Always thought the 85 sounded a little off now I know why..
