I just picked up a brand new MM Sting Ray. It has a really funky nut on it though. Does anyone know what this new design of the nut is all about? I have never seen one like it. It is twice as wide as the normal nut and it has some sort of notch on the fretboard side. Help!!

It's a compensated nut. The slot ends at different spots for each string to improve intonation.

Mostly, It's a conversational piece:D
Begin thus upon havin been questioned: "Well, see, there is this extremely clever man called Dudley Gimpel, who..." then just make up some outrageous **** you feel like talking about:)

Really, check Ed friedlands bass test vid of the SR5 20th anniv. He is rather convincing regarding the mutant nut;)

I have never heard of a compensated nut. Bridges and Saddles, but a Nut? When did they come out with this? How long have they been using them? Can I replace this cheap plastic one for a good Graphtec or Bone one?

I think it's a fine nut. But I don't know of a Graphtec compensated nut... so I guess I'm no help there. You could get a Graphtec nut and slot it normally, wouldn't be compensated though. Like said earlier, check out Ed Friedland's 20th SR5 video, he explains it in there.

Probably about 2 years now.. give or take 6 months.

I'd leave it.. it's patented, after all!

It improves the intonation of your strings across the length of the fingerboard.
That's a good thing, and a replacement nut won't do that.

please, don't ever call anything coming from EBMM "cheap" please, at least not here:mad:

The compensated nut first saw the light of day on the Bongo, and yes it improves intonation a lot. And should you want to "improve" with another nut material, you can use the nut as a template.

I have a SR 5 HH with these new style nut. I was changing to a a thicker gauge of strings, and upon tuneing up the "B" string, a piece of the nut broke right off. :( Anyways, the string still seems stay on without hitch, but the nut is missing a piece. Has anybody else who ran into a problem like this? The bass is brand new, and I think it should be covered under warranty, but I'd hate to have to send to EB for repair. Is there a local shop in Los Angeles that can do warranty repairs?

all repair is done in house at musicman in SLO, they do all repairs there for quality control purposes, and wouldn't you want the same people that built the bass to be the same ones who do the repairs, give customer service a call and they will take care of it. that SR5 is a great bass, It just didn't like the .135 B that tony put on it.

Hey, a fellow TB'r on another forum? Totally agree, this bass is just awesome. Thanks for the advice. I'm going to find time to drive up SLO to have it fixed, but it's no big deal, the "B" strings sound great.

I'd like to change my 5er to have a high C instead of a low B, anyone know if EB makes a nut for that mod or will I have to carve my own?

I went to shim the nut on my SUB fretless. It had been filed down a bit too far.

It was that way when I got it.....

.......and I broke it.......

D'OH!

I'll need a NEW one of those!
