Can I ask a favor . . .

Can someone who has MM90's please measure them and tell me what the dimensions are? I don't have access to my ASS with MM90's at the moment.

I'm thinking about trying out P90's from Fralin or elsewhere, but need to be sure they will fit.

Please indicate whether the measurements are for the pickup cover or the route.

Thanks,
Brian

Hi Brian
They are 85 mm X 33 mm
The depth is awkward to measure when they are mounted on the guitar - I'll try getting a paper clip down the side and give you my best shot at the depth measurement.

The measurements I have given are for the cover.

Spud - thanks very much.

Now I need to check with Fralin or others to see if their P90's will fit.

I'll update everyone when I do something on this.

I spoke to Roy at RS Guitarworks. Roy is not only a great guy, but also extremely knowledgeable abouit guitars, tonewoods, construction and their collective contribution to the overall sound of a guitar. Also very willing to help you to come to the right choice for upgrades, if you can indicate what end result you're looking for.

Based on his input, I'm ordering a pair of Fralin P90's that are wound for RS with some subtle differences, and a Vintage electronics upgrade kit for the pots & cap.

The Fralin's are 1.8mm wider than the MM90's, hoping this will still fit.

I won't be able to get this installed until late May, I'll update on results when I can.

Man, that is a weird size for sure. That means they are

3.346"Wx1.299H"x.629"D

Most P90 PU's on average are:

3.365"Wx1.38Hx.951"D (1.092" to be safe)

Why would the MM90's be such an oddball size? You all say that the Dimarzio Dlx P90's will fit but with some chiseling. I may have to go that route. I could have sworn, but could not find, that there was a cool pickup that slides right in. But the search still continues!

Spuds dimensions are dead on, MM-90's are well Music Man 90's, they are different than others, I dont think they are then but they are not crunchy, meaty etc, they have a unique tonal quality, and I think we all have different tastes and tonality.

i like MM-90's especially in an AL, I replaced the bridge MM-90 in my ASS with a DiMarzio DLX Plus just to add a humbucking tone to the guitar not because I disliked the MM-90.

But they are thinner(dimension wise hat is) than most soapbar type PUPS out there.:)

Yo' fing!

It's my understanding that the DimDLX requires a bit of chiseling right? Those are the ones I want I think. I think I read here somewhere that Blues Bar or something like that would slide in.

I see yer collection is ever changing and killer as always... you bastard! HA!!

Yes requires a little, um, work, either a good chisel or a dremel tool as Fred said about 1/8 will do, plus it does sound killer, I got my inspiration from Fred adding the PUP to his and I am glad I did it.

Yea I have been changing but just finding my balls that suit me best, one more coming and then I am done, like anyone will believe that:)

Guys, I just got my Axis SS back from the tech who did the replacement of the pots, cap and pickups. As mentioned above, I went with the RS/Fralin P090s, stock winds (unless RS gets something tweaked to their liking). I also added the RS pots and their vintage-style oil & paper cap. The P90's are "vintage" in flavor, no RWRP for the center switch position. The Silent Circuit was bypassed.

There was no extra routing needed to fit the RS/Fralin P90's.

I'll post my thoughts on the sound changes after I've had more time with it, but I can report that when the tech called to say the guitar was ready, what he said over the phone was "I've seen God!". (And he's a great player, and a gear-head like the rest of us, and a huge MusicMan supporter.)

So, are you saying you LOVE the Fralin's then? Another question.. does God play blues or country? Cuz I was hoping God likes to rock. And with some hair on it!

Here is the thing... if Spud's dimensions are right on, then something doesn't makes sense. He's saying that MM90's are 85 x 33 x 16 mm, yet Dimarzio DLX 90's are (Cover Dimensions): 86 x 35 x 19 mm). The extra 3 mm's in depth would account for the routing. But nothing in those measurements says to me "Drop in". In fact, not one manufacturers spec has anything just "dropping in". maybe 1mm isn't that much of a big deal? But as of now, I know the Dimarzio DLX 90 will work if you route the depth out a little, and the Fralin P90 will drop right in. Other PU's I'm looking at are the WB Custom Pickups: guitar pickups wound by hand WB90's, Zephyr Blues 90 X set Zephyr Blues P90 Pickups: SD Pickups: Custom-Made, Hand-Wound Pickups by Dave Stephens, Stephens Design, maybe an SKGuitars P90, or the custom Dualtone II humbucker made to fit in a P90 slot Custom hand wound guitar pickups, New and vintage pickup repair and rewinds. I'm still considering a good Duncan or the Dimarzio DLX for sure though. Thanks guys!

Just need to add re: the Fralin P90's, they are a wee bit higher, so the pole pieces are a touch (sorry, can't say how much) closer to the strings. So if you want latitude to drop them, you would have to rout out a bit more depth.

Just noticed this today.

Are you guys saying that the mm90 cover is a standard p-90 cover, but he pickup underneath is smaller?

I just put a pair of stock Fralin soap bar p90's in my Axis Super Sport. The original MM90's had been replaced with Dimarzio P169's when I bought the guitar. They weren't bad, but the Fralins's are just superb. There doesn't seem to have been any mods done on my axis to fit in the Dimarzio's, and the Fraln's were a drop in fit, so ...
