I was trying to find a thread on this but couldn't.
I have some great audio clips that Arin (phattduk) recorded for me a while ago. There were some cleans and distorted. They're great! But the distorted clips are not what I would describe as metal. They are more hard rock.

So that's the question! Can you use mm90s with metal???

I'm not sure if you can call RUSH metal, but Alex Lifeson is seen warming up backstage with a P90 equipped Axis on the Rush in Rio DVD. He doesn't play it onstage, however (at least not on the DVD).

MM90s can get really dirty and sound *great*. However, silent circuit or not, they'll never be quite as noise free as a good humbucker. Just something to be aware of. Then again, some of the best heavy guitar sounds ever recorded came from single coil equiped guitars.

My point? Metal is a state of mind, not just a guitar tone ;)

I'm sure that Mountain's "Mississippi Queen" was recorded by Leslie West using a LP Junior with P90s...but is this metal?

Fogman,

I've used my MM90 AL to play some seriously heavy tunes that my old band used to play without missing a beat. In fact, my soundman actually liked how the MM90's sounded better than what I used to use....EBMM EVH

Here's an assortment of the heavier stuff I used the AL on:

Alice in Chains "Aint Like That" & "Man in a Box"
Rage Against the Machine "Know Your Enemy"

I think that the problem with MM90s and Metal is that you're not going to get that compression and tight bottom end with MM90s driving the preamp like you get with humbuckers, so you'd have to try and tweak that in the tone stack, which may or may not get you what you want... You'd probably end up needing a graphic EQ somewhere in the chain, maybe in the effects loop, to tweak you into that zone... my 2¢

Agreed! I am really loving the expressiveness (is that a word?) that I can get with my AL (even though it's SSS). It really sounds good with a lot of gain and has a clarity and cut that I can't get with my HB guitars. I bet the MM90s would give even more kick and punch.

But beej is right. Jimi did some pretty heavy stuff with SCs as I remember. And Blackmore too, as well as many others. For me, I'm finding the SC to be more expressive and flexible than hums. I can dirty them up a lot and still clean up very nicely with just the volume knob.

My two cents.
