Hey Bis. I love both guitars but if forced to choose, I would go with the JPXI because I prefer the neck radius. Tonally, the JPXI has a slightly darker but more focused sound which is more applicable to the things I do. The JPX's sound, to my ears, is more akin to a true semi-hollowbody in that is has a "roundness" to it... I do love it for certain things.

Agreed .... My JPXI has my favorite Neck Radius.. Ultra Flat and Thin...

I have a JPX exactly like this, I love it, but I'd rather have the traditional barolo because I just love that color, even though the roasted maple neck is superior to mahogany in my opinion.

The only negative point is the lacquer in the neck finish though, it holds my hand too much, I was talking about that yesterday in another place. Maple with gunstock oil is much better. And I agree, the piezo on mine is just different and better than the other JP's I tested.

Aw man I'm green with jealousy. I've been looking for a deal on some Sugar.

Does anyone know if it was a Sugar that Petrucci used on his early DVD "Scenes from New York"?

I believe that guitar was the original Black Sparkle prototype. The Black Sugar was a limited run back in 2011. The primary difference in the finishes is that the Black Sparkle has silver sparkles and the Black Sugar has gold sparkles.

That's a beauty! Congrats! What sort of a difference do you feel using the 5 way lever pickup selector vs. the 3 way toggle switch? I think this is the only JP model which comes with that right? I've always been curious.

That's right, the JPX is the only JP with the 5 way selector. In general I prefer the 5 way selector because I don't like dealing with push/pull pots. The downside is that sometimes if I'm switching pups a lot during a song and I'm not paying attention, I might throw the lever too far or not far enough and get the wrong pup combo. It's not a big deal and is totally user error.
