.... i think the gauge 56 string (sixth) sounds a whole lot better tuned to C than B. much much punchier (at least as much as a normal 6 string hardtail). for that psychosocial/dark eternal night kind of sound, i have a jp7.

Are you using Not Even Slinky's for the C tuning?

Does the lower 6 feel much different on the JP7? (never tried the JP7)

Honestly, I dont want to change a damn thing on mine. I think it is really perfect as is...this is so far the only guitar that I dont want to start experimenting with pickups and pots and switching and what not. Its just so damn versatile...I can get some sick heavy tones from the bridge pickup alone...and I like the fact that it has the dark fat character, but yet it is so articulate and crisp sounding. I would probably only change the wiring if I got a second one just to vary it up a little bit...something along the lines of the AL HH and ASS position 2 and 4.

in terms of playing feel, i like the JP7 (for standard B) better. the bridge encourages timid playing (well for me anyway, i play like a gorilla) and the rough throaty sound the B makes is awesome. and because the rest of the set is a normal set of 10s, it never feels like a downtuned guitar.

the emg85 was doing less than stellar with a looser string and so i moved it up a semitone. now it feels like a normal E string, and i can let loose on it. there is a really big difference in what your music will sound like based on string tension. the morse also likes having a bit (tiny bit) higher action for it's best tone.

if i didn't have a JP7, i would still prefer to have it tuned to C, it feels better and sounds much better.

EDIT: a simple comparison in sound: DTs a nightmare to remember is in C and dark eternal night is in B. even tho there are more differences than similarities between the 2 (album, bfr vs standard, year), you can still hear the fundamental difference in percussive vs resonant sounds.

i've resolder pickups selector this way:
1- neck humbucker (stock)
2- neck humbucker+bridge humbucker (stock)
3- neck humbucker+bridge single
4- bridge single+half of bridge humbucker
5- bridge humbucker (stock)

I like this combinations much more than stock, tele-like sound in 4-th pos, and very unique 3-th, sounds great on cleans.

Necro post time... I put 500k pots and a .033 PIO cap in my avatar Y2D, wired 50's style. Also I swapped Alnico 8 magnets into the humbuckers and it made it a totally different guitar (not that there's anything wrong with it stock, but I have a Darklord that I'm keeping original). Totally gets a big Rush "limelight" type sound, but the cleans are both fuller AND twangier. I love it!

My Lord has chrome buttons...but that matches the pup covers so that works.
Neat thread about y2d mods though... gets me thinking..

Has anyone tried to turn their old-skool Morse into a Y2D? I have an older one that I love in every way EXCEPT I just can't handle the switching scheme. I'd love to have a 5 way wired like the Y2D and still retain the low output single coil three position switch.

Check out my reply here. Its not exactly what you described, but you might like it.
That's a pretty cool scheme. Fwiw, I borrowed your approach for my Morse, except I kept the Bridge & Neck position on the 5-way lever, like the Y2D. And I wired up the 'add bridge' toggle to be a series/parallel switch for the bridge HB.
