Thought I'd get yous guys opinions on my dream guitar - kind of a cross between various EBMM models:

  • Petrucci neck but with maple board and only 22 frets.
  • Locking tuners.
  • Petrucci body but in ash with clear purple finish (what can I say, I like purple).
  • Purple dot inlays.
  • Petrucci floating trem with piezo - routed per the standard Petrucci.
  • Piezo / mags / both three way. Piezo volume, mags volume, mags tone.
  • H-S-H pup configuration.
  • Petrucci three way switch controlling the two humbuckers except middle would be both humbuckers (not the standard inner coils only).
  • Push-pull trem pot to split the humbuckers.
  • Separate two way switch for single coil (on / off) - when on, single coil would be added to whichever pups / coils were active.
  • Twelve pup combinations - would cover strat and humbucker tones nicely. Only pup combination not possible is the middle single coil by itself - a tone I don't use often.

That would do it. With the pups, custom wiring, and piezo, there's not much the guitar wouldn't do.

When I first started reading this I thought that you were off your rocker. Then, as I went through the list I started nodding my head in agreement.

Really, this is only a JP with a third pickup and a different finish. That's really all that's keeping me from moving ahead with a JP as my next EBMM. JP may have the chops to make the guitar sing with only three pup settings, but I am a mere mortal and I like a little more versatility in my guitars. I'm also a natural wood kinda guy, too.

22 vs 24 frets? Doesn't sway me one way or the other.
Locking tuners are really nice to have on my ASS.
Purple dots? Get a sharpie ;)

I know the thought of introducing even more options in the line has to make BP squirm :D

I guess everyone's got their dream guitar. Mine is in my avatar. ;)

The pickup combinations that you mention are too daunting for me!

FWIW, I'd be happy with only five positions on a 3-pup JP :)

I do find it funny how the original Steve Morse model was total overkill on the switches and selectors, but the Y2D is so much simpler.

I like the options I’ve described because when shredding, I love the Petrucci standard three way for quick and easy control of the humbuckers (in which case the humbuckers wouldn’t be split via the tone push-pull) and the single coil wouldn’t be engaged. But if you want some nice single coil tones, split the buckers via the push/pull and/or throw in the middle single coil for the nice in-between strat tones. With a five way, you’d also be missing out on the bridge and neck pups together option.

You can do it. Almost. Score an older ash Silo from ebay, and some beat-up pet, move the neck, add the arm contour to the silo body, route it for JP trem and repaint it, add some switches... Or get a silo special with 22 fret maple neck and sand the neck down....
You can do it, as long as you have the guts to destroy 2 or 3 perfectly fine EBMM's!!!!!!!!!!!
I certainly don't....
