Hi all,

I'm currently looking at getting a new bass. I'm currently torn between a Bongo 5 HH or a Big Al SSS (4 or 5). I've located a mint condition Tangerine Pearl Big Al 4 SSS , and I'm eager to jump on it since it's discontinued.

However, I won't be able to purchase another bass for a while. I'm content on passing on the current Bongo colors (even though Tangerine Pearl is super sexy), but I'm wondering if more colors will be available throughout the year, and maybe I should hold off and see what comes up.

Thoughts?

Can't go wrong with either a Bongo or Big Al.

Have you had the chance to play both? Does one feel and sound better to you? That should be the most important factor.

But all things being equal, would strongly consider the Big Al since they are no longer produced. Bongos are still being made so would probably be easier to get a Bongo in the future than the Big Al.

Definitely recommend eventually owning both!

Colors of instruments come and go. A lot of this is influenced on sales of a particular color I am sure. Sometimes tere are special runs of a color and feature set only available to order for a limited time. Once the time limit passes, no other instruments from that run can be ordered. Can often get something cool that way. Starry Night PDN is an example.

That was available for order last June.

No one knows what will be available in the future. (well... EBMM for the immediate future.. but they may not be ready to tell)

There are awesome colors of Bongos that are no longer available new, but pop up on the used market from time to time. I bet you can find a color you like at some point. But even if you don't find exactly the color you want, buy a Bongo and/or a Big Al anyway. They are great basses! And if color is that important to you, you can always get it refinished to something you want.

Thanks for the input.

I love both. I think my favorite sound from the Bongo rates higher than my favorite sound from the Big Al, but I prefer the Big Al in terms of it's versatility. I'd definitely be happy with either one.

The Starry Night PDN looks fantastic, but I want funkier colors for the bongo. That's why I find the orange so appealing. Hoping they'll release a teal or pink/coral red later this year!

I wouldn't wait on a certain color becoming available to purchase a bass. It probably won't happen. But you never know, you could win the color lottery!

I would say a Tangerine Pearl Big Al today, is much better than a future Teal/Pink/Coral Bongo that may never exist.

I think Teal was offered on the Stingray at one time. Not sure if it was available on the Bongo. But maybe you might find something on the used market that is more a color you like.

This is not quite Teal BM2988 Music Man Bongo 4 2009 but I think it is a cool color no longer available.

You're probably right. I'm not banking on a teal/red bongo coming out, but big purchases always give me that analysis paralysis as I wonder what might be just a few months down the road. Even if a choice bongo does turn up later this year, I can probably pick it up sometime next year.

I'm leaning towards the big al. That Ice Blue is real nice though!

I also just learned that Teal Pearl exits, however. https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/cb/fd/de/cbfdde5aef25d8b6b9ae82d19fc19c7e.jpg
