here's a review I wrote of Steve's latest DVD release with the dregs '78 Montreaux show

Hi gang,

Well, I picked up the dregs DVD and here are my initial impressions after one complete viewing.

Based on the cover photo (same as on the 20th century masters Best of) it appears Jerry Seinfeld got his famous PUFFY SHIRT from none other than Steve Morse! And steve was wearing a sport coat to boot. Odd choice for Mr. Sleeveless. No? Perhaps he was on his way to being best man at a wedding or something right after the photo shoot?

And I can't figure out how Andy West manages to look like a 48 year old when he couldn't have been older than 25. Go figure.

MUSIC
Definitely the Allen Sloan show, but he was in fine form. Guitar a little soft in the mix for me, but it does give you a greater appreciation of how well Steve writes for OTHER instruments. Still, his tone was great (allen's too).

My favorites were The Bash, Country House Shuffle, and Attila The Hun (love the rapid strumming on that).

It's safe to say that the crowd responded the most to THE BASH. Got them in a bit of a frenzy.

Also, I've been going to see steve since '82 so it was strange seeing Andy as the mouthpiece for the band, especially given how funny and warm steve has always been at the mike since I've been following them.

Another great dvd moment is Punk Sandwich (in the extra section), which has always been one of my favorites from the early catalogue. it's a great song, and we get a rare sighting of Steve's red 2 pickup guitar that looked like a fender of some sort. (Did Steve go straight from 2 to 4 pickups without even stopping at 3?)

Leeches and crank it up seem to be the studio versions with the band play acting, but it was GREAT seeing Mark on violin and a twin of Steve's guitar. (Though I have that stuff on a bootleg tape I got like 12 years ago...actually 3 tapes that also included the steve and dave duets that can be seen on sects/dregs).

Bottom line...great playing, average mix, but still a must own. Not sure if I'll view it as much as the duets though, which I've probably watched 20 times in the past dozen years.

Interesting to note that only 3 songs from the setlist (The Bash, Take it off the top, and Country House) are still played regularly at live shows. Though Attila the Hun sneaks in there occassionally too.

Which brings me to a question I'll probably try and ask steve at the EB Open House, that being "Which are your favorite tunes you've written that you never play in concert?"

Thanks.

Unfortunately, it's getting harder and harder to find.
We'll listen from airport if there are no objections.
