Morse/Flying Colors Concert

Anyone going to see steve and flying colors at their ONLY western half of US show
Sept 4th in Torrance?

Not only am I going, I have an extra ticket that I'm still trying to sell. I'm in Phoenix and flying in the day of the show and out the next day.

I'm going to attempt to go next week here in NYC. I'm totally loving the Flying Color album from beginning to end. Dont know why I waited so long to get it.

I am really looking forward to seeing this show. As much as I dig Morse's guitar work, LaRue and Portnoy really make the rhythm section so freaking solid and amazing to listen to. Peter Collins producing this album was amazing. I shudder to think what might have happened if these guys had another week to polish up the album. (It was written and recorded in 9 days)

I really hope this venture is an epoch shattering success for these guys.

i would love to read a bit of a review because i´m undecided if i should go to stuttgart on 15th sept.
of course i´m a big steve-morse-fan, but the flying colours album did not convince me that much (ok...didnt hear it that often). what was the setlist, which non-flying-colours-songs did they play? which guitars did steve bring to play. thanks in advance!

Steve played #1 all night long. Never changed. Drop-D or normal tuned, he just did it on the fly.

They played song each from Spock's Beard, Dreggs, Endochine, and Dream Theater. They also played the entire FC albumn, almost in order.

The concert was amazing. If you're thinking on going, just go, I can't imagine being disappointed.

No drum solo. Didn't expect that. No real guitar feature solo. Dave LaRue has a bass feature solo that also intro's into the DT song.

House sound wasn't great and had the same issues for both bands so I'm going to blame it on the room and/or the sound man. If you were a bass player you'd like the mix. However it was challenging to hear the guitar/keys at times unless they were soloing. To my ear the low end was overpowering the mid-range. Also had trouble hearing MP's vocals on the TWO songs that he sings. No trouble with CM or NM's vocals. And those guys have great voices.

Steve's sons band, New World Martyr, was really out of place for the crowd. They're a very competent band BUT much more suited to a younger crowd. A real power pop kinda-punk influenced band of really young kids playing to an audience that wasn't interested in pogo-ing. Kevin's guitar solo sounded way better than the few youtube's I've seen of him. He play a BFR SM, a BFR ASS, and a 25th w/rosewood neck and trem.

Steve's son's band, New Age Martyr only supported the first show.

I agree with Buc's review on sound. Lots of bottom end and i even thought steves guitar was too loud (never said that before!) and those instruments tended to overpower the vocals and keys. That said, we have to understand this was the bands FIRST gig together and they were working out some kinks and getting to know one another as a band on stage together.

Tons of potential to be a fantastic touring act with a few more shows under their belt. It was all they could do to remember lines and parts and cues. I was surprised there was so much sharing of vocals between NM and casey.
Highlights for me were Odyssey, The Blue Ocean (which was the first song and the mix felt best to me) and one of Neal's about When the sun comes up which was a vocal bonanza with everyone singing up front. (With Standing O's for odyssey and neals song that were chilling)

Go see them. By the time you do they will be well rehearsed and flowing.
Portnoy was a really great host and kidded the other guys about botched lines, missed parts, and his own screwups too.

Our tix were $80/ea

Hoping for some smb or dregs dates around NAMM this year (next technically).

Oh, and Tommy was on this tour. Back to short hair too.

The Spock's Beard song was "June". I can't remember the name of the Endochine song but I really liked it. The DT song was Repentance: Regret VIII/Restitution IX.

Highlights for me were numerous, but I loved the Endochine song, Everything Changes and Infinite Fire was killer.

Casey played a surprising amount of guitar, even playing some of the guitar harmony's to steve's leads.

I really enjoyed the stuffing out of this show, Steve's #1 just sounds so right in concert. The guy at the mixing board had the bass drum for both shows turned up so loud that I felt I was receiving CPR.
Amazed at how much the vocals were shared
LaRue Solos. attention bass players: the bar has been raised.
Portny drumming. Holy cow was that ever cool!
Neil Morse coming out front and singing was really powerful
Casey's singing is just easy to listen to and the Flying Colors songs are really well written.
I really liked The Storm - Oddessy - Forever in a Daze
I drove 520 miles (each way) to see this show and it was worth every mile.
